Yeesh the new iMac is pretty expensive..

..nevertheless still want. Very badly.

Works with every new Mac.
You can connect your LED Cinema Display to any of the current lineup of Mac notebooks and desktop computers: MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro. That’s because the LED Cinema Display uses the ultracompact Mini DisplayPort connector. While other display connectors have you lining up pins or fumbling with screws, the Mini DisplayPort connector is easy in, easy out. And because it carries both video and audio, there’s one less cable to worry about.

Only works with:

MBP/MB 2010
MacMini 2010
iMac/MacPro july 2010

of course. (which have the new audio-enabled MDP)

Previous video-only-MDP Macs will still be using USB for audio, I think. (like on the 24")

ps: hybrid "optibay-style" (but minus the warranty voiding and losing the ODD) option for iMacs:

In stark contrast to Open CL, CUDA is actually implemented. Let's hope there will be independent offerings from NVidia.

How long has CUDA been on the market? How long has OpenCL been on the market? How much is CUDA actually implemented?

nVidia won't play nice with other companies, AMD actually embraces open standards.

Looks like there's a core i5 option for the 21.5" version. Heat no longer an issue then...

Still waiting on UK pricing. Should be a laugh.

Ah, you cheat you... you left out the five year-old technology "super" drive, didn't you? Why aren't you touting that?

Honestly, while I agree that Apple should offer bluray, I'm not the tiniest bit interested in it so it didn't even enter my mind. For those of us using the MPs for real work, it's a damn good machine and the update looks good.

I think you're confusing a 32nm dual core (i5-680 "Clarkdale" 3.60ghz on 21.5" iMac, TDP 73W) with a 45nm quad core (i5-760 "Lynnsfield" 2.8ghz on high-end 27" imac, TDP 95W). The former is quite cooler.

Blame Intel for the stupid naming.

So...looks like my next display ain't gonna be apple then...shame.

• 16:9
• glossy only
• probably no wider gamut than the current 24"

5$ says the store goes down tomorrow morning, everyone has a heart attack, predictions abound over 2 hours as to new Mac Pros, iMacs and displays. Credit cards get emptied and are ready and finally it comes back up with...

iPhone 4 pre-orders for the 18 new countries that get it on the 30th.

I believe the word I'm looking for is LOLZ.

Hard to get it much more wrong than that, predict they announce nothing and they announce all four. We'll all keep that in mind next time around when you're telling everyone they're "wrong".

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll look forward to the benchmarks to see what kind of advantage the dual-core i5 has over the i3.

I wish Apple would stop dumping all over it's iMac customers. The 5750?! Really?

I know heat is an issue but come on. This is barely a mid range graphics card in the highest end iMac! At least give us the 5770 from the Mac Pro.

Now I don't know whether to buy :( so disheartened.

I know what you mean. I was waiting for a better graphics card and silly me believed Apple were going to include a good one for once.

Sorry, I take that back...that's a terrible Mac Pro update (another downgrade on the low end and another price increase in the middle).

What Apple should have done was invest some R&D $ on a high quality, hig-performance anti-reflective coating or similar polarizing filter, to dramactically reduce glare from reflections on the glossy screens... then they have their cake and eat it too...silencing *some* of the matte screen crowds.

Offer one screen but make it usable for the majority of both glossy v. matte users.

Meh, won't happen anytime soon :(

Just have to buy a cheap stick on anti-refective film from 3rd party.

Since Apple doesn't make it's own display panels, they should have long ago updated to more modern, wider gamut, more accurate (not the same thing) color displays like the competition.

those expecting pro graphics/photo displays from Apple will alwasy be disappointed, Apple has never tried to satisfy that niche with a $2k+ monitor (current prices, not old 23 ACD prices :p ).

The lacie 730 backlit 30in LED, with hood costs $3.6k MSRP new!

What to go with?

This is a bitter sweet day like most of you are saying. I'm not sure what to go with now, really confused, I waited over 2 years to make the switch from my 2005 2.5 G5.
First of all I can't afford the 12 core, well without it being paid off quickly which won't happen fast at all. I am a video editor, but it's not my main source of income. Plus it's time to replace my old 20" monitor too, so it keeps adding up. I love being able to open up my G5 and do what I want, unlike the current iMac in our house ( which is not full blown with i5 or i7). I only do video editing, music, adobe Photoshop and websites mainly. No 3D or serious motion graphic work. I'm now kinda of leaning towards a iMac i7, sad thing is I can't really wait again, I stopped dumping money into my G5 because I thought a great update was coming, at the normal pricing. Now I can spend 3,000 plus a monitor, but from everything I have read so far it looks like the now older model is almost just A's good at those prices.
Only problem with the iMac i7 is opening and messing with ram etc, which I have learned to enjoy playing around inside and installing new stuff.
I hope some new news comes out about these machines. I understand why everything is so expensive, not blaming apple I just need some advice on which way to to go. I'm sure the iMac i7 will be fine for me, but I know in the long run I will be annoyed I don't have the casing of a pro. So are the lower pro lines really going to be slower or the same A's the new ones. Ahhh just confused and kinda of annoyed at how this is all working out for us pro users.
Thanks on any info that may help.

If you want PCIe, or you need more connection options than 1 FW800 port, go for the Mac Pro.

Or, if you don't need PCIe, and won't connect more than three FW800 peripherals, go with the iMac.

p.s. Nothing wrong with buying the now EOL'ed Mac Pros and iMacs to save some change.
