27" stock iMac video playback

I'm new to mac, and can't figure something out with AVCHD playback via Quicktime, Movist, MplayerX or VLC. No matter which program I use, the playback is not smooth and often stutters. ( I also see this playing back mp4 content from iphone) I have a 27" 2.9 i5, 24 Gb ram and 512mb video card. All of this should handle any format with ease as I have an original WDTV that plays flawlessly, and a dell laptop from work with a dual core i3 and no video card that plays flawlessly. What's the deal?

Are you performing anything in the background? eg; video editing, youtube, chat clients etc? This could be lagging the video...

nothing in background.... CPU shows 3% in use. My wife's 21 inch also does the same thing.....

Hmmm, haven't anything like this before on the new iMacs... Have you tried speaking to Apple 😛
