2850 Multi-core score with a 15 inch 2017 MacBook Pro

Hello I just did some geekbench testing and my MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.9Ghz from 2017 is getting Multi-Core scores of around 2850

that’s very low.

I think I might need a new charger for my MacBook Pro. Maybe I should get the more powerful 97W charger. Would this be bad for my MacBook pro since it’s from 2017? Would a stronger charger be bad for it?

EDIT I did a retest after a bit and it’s at 3704 now. I think I’ll retry the geekbench score when I get a new charger and see if that helps the macbook stay cooler.

I don't believe it will utilise any higher of a charging wattage than the original 86W charger it came it. It won't hurt either, but I doubt it will help anything.

The issue with the 2016-2019 models performance is that the CPU use too much power (even on battery) for their enclosure, causing them to throttle. My previous 2018 MBP with a i7 also displayed very differing results in Geekbench, and the only way I briefly got it to not throttle was putting it in the window when it was -10 degrees celcius outside and waiting for the CPU temp to drop to where it wouldn’t go lower before starting the test. Obviously I did that just out of curiosity and it’s no fix for the throttling, feeding your computer more power will not fix it either. The only thing you can do is to clean the fans once in a while to make sure as much air as possible is getting through, but due to the poor thermal design of the computer you’re stuck with these performance variations.
