Okay, with great amounts of hubris, I think that the best movie ever directed is:

Rules of the Game directed by Jean Renoir. :)

Enough said.

You're both wrong. ;)

Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest movie ever. ;)

Oooh, that's a toughie!!
I can't give one and I'm about to take the dog to the vet's.
So 2 off the top of my head:

Birds
Elephant

Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest movie ever. ;)
Greatest movie ever if you have insomnia and need to fall asleep fast. :p

Greatest directed movie ever? I'll have to go with any Robert Altman movie. Gosford Park was da bomb!

Citizen Kane.
Oh God, I knew someone would pull out Welles. Why didn't you say Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.? I hope you are saying Citizen Kane based on the merits of the movie, not just because you are a pseudo film buff who only names the *top* rated movie by critics because it's the top rated movie by critics...I thought it was a great movie, for what it is, but I LOVED The Godfather: Part II on all levels, acting, cinematography, direction, etc. Welles was revolutionary, there's no question, but I wouldn't call it the most entertaining film. Watching it is like sitting through a first-year film class noting the technique, angles, composition, etc.

For reference, here's IMDB's top 10.

1. 9.1 The Godfather (1972) 203,330
2. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 243,642
3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 114,949
4. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) 59,024
5. 8.8 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) 185,626
6. 8.8 Pulp Fiction (1994) 206,835
7. 8.8 Casablanca (1942) 96,590
8. 8.8 Schindler's List (1993) 143,698
9. 8.8 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 152,761
10. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai (1954)

Oh, And I vote Cool Runnings. :p

Unfortunately it's ironic that most people will probably name a movie from the past 25 years when there are tons of movies from the 1940's and 1950's.

I'm going to take the road well-traveled and say The Lord of the Rings.

Daniel.

Ironically, I think that LOTR is way overrated in terms of cinematic composition honestly. Epic storyline and competent cinematography doesn't make up / comprise a revolutionary masterpiece of cinema, IMHO.

"Gone with the Wind" was a puff-piece. "Casablanca" wasn't even Curtiz's best film (I preferred "Mildred Pierce"). And yes, the reason I cited it was on the merits of the movie as film art. While I must find a movie entertaining to recommend it to other people, the question of "best movie ever directed" seems one of artistic merit rather than entertainment value. I'm not saying anything against "The Godfather: Part II" because it's been a couple of years since I've seen the Godfather movies (plan on revisiting them in a couple of months). I've seen over 120 movies since January alone...there are probably 20 movies I enjoyed more than Kane, but no movie I have seen that was better directed on the whole.

There are many better films, but the one which warms my heart is About a Boy...I'm a softy on the inside really....

Gone with the Wind is way overrated. I didn't see anything innovative in the characters or the way that the shots were created. Even the relatively unknown "Black Narcissus" kicks its butt 10 times over. Pressberger is awesome!
