*IMHO*

Das Boot
Empire Strikes Back (best of the Star Wars)
Flash Gordon (its so cheesy its THAT good)
Leaving Las Vegas
Apocalypse Now

"What do you mean Flash Gordon approaching?!?!

I would say for script and/or cinematic excellence, probably Shawshank Redemption, or Godfather.

but for movies i would have on my deserted island scenario, my list would include
1) money pit
2) groundhog day
3) the right stuff (script was a bit campy, but i love the historical aspects)

Sounds cool...but how to we determine "best"? Do you want to go with "best" as in best done/artistically superior or "best" as in most enjoyable. Or we could always do both (two lists of ten). I love the idea, but we need some way to keep "2001" from competing against "Blades of Glory".

I have the same problem. I have to qualify my best lists into top 10, 25 etc. or by genre or time period.

During the Holy Week break, I saw the movie "The Ten Commandments". It made me wonder how this film is so wonderful to watch. I think this is the most watch film ever. I watched it almost every Holy Week. In my honest opinion, this is the greatest movie of all time. The one that has come close to it is "Gone With The Wind". Just my $0.02 cents.

I never want to put down anyone's favorite films. I don't put some of the "best" films on my list ever. I think Gone With The Wind is one of those horrible over rated films that I can't bear to watch. I have often wondered why I don't like so many of the so called greatest films. Can't stand Wizard of Oz and so on. I do love old movies and watch TCM non stop.

Great I read your post and now I am singing the silly Queen song. Make it stop!!

Grindhouse was awesome. Probably falling in top 10 easily in my lifetime :)

Interesting choice. I think it looks great. A lot of attention to detail from that period it is recreating. I tried to see it a couple of days ago but the theater had trouble with the first two showings and I had to get my money back.

Yes, it's a postmodern pastiche of various genres and tons of intellectual and musical allusions. It looks simple on the surface but there is an undertone of political stuff in Planet Terror (note that the zombies = supporters of the current admin) and the pro-feminist irony in Death Proof (note the symmetry of the plot with the women who are victims in the 1st part transformed into killers in the 2nd part).

Don't ruin the movie for me!!:D

Hmmm... My initial idea was only looking at everyone's top 10 or 20 movies without regard to type.

Not sure the best way to stratify the data (movies) because many fall into multiple categories.

To this day, I still cannot fathom why so many people love Groundhog day. The first time I saw it I thought it was horrendous and retarded, and figured it would slip into film obscurity, but people love it.

Best movie ever: Might Morphin' Power Rangers (1995)

Power Rangers? Serious... my goodness.

With all due respect, maybe you just don't get Bill Murray's style of humor.

Did you enjoy Rushmore, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, What about Bob, or Scrooged?

Best mentioned in this thread:

Grosse Point Blank
Lawrence of Arabia

I'd add:

The Grifters
The English Patient

But there are almost certainly movies I'm missing.
