So I've got an eMac (USB 2.0) with 512MB of RAM (2x256.)

After some quick googling, I realized that there are 1GB DIMMs available in a specification that should work in the eMac (i.e. PC2700 184 pin etc.)

Could I buy 2 1GB DIMMs and have them be recognized even though the max specification is 1GB (2x512MB?)

Why would you want to? (Just wondering) are you feeling short of ram? Wouldn't it be better to put that money aside to buy a NEW mac 😉 😀

I suppose I should, but it seems that 2GB of RAM is around $180 including shipping, so it's a lot cheaper than even getting a Mini.

(And trust me, I figured this would be the best interm solution until I can afford a Mac Pro and two 23in displays. 😉)

Then I would probably do it 😀

Anyone else know?

Nevermind! After some careful searching in the MR forums, I got my answer.

So what was the answer here?

It seems that several other forum users asked the same quesion in the eMac/iMac forum.

Turns out that the eMac with USB 2.0 can support 2GB (2*1GB.) Apple only listed 1GB as the maximum because at the time, that's all you could really find for sale.

I figure my eMac has some life left in it still!
