That's pretty much the longest that is sold for a charging connection, even from other manufacturers.
And, that's likely to get the fast charge that folks like with those charging cables. Too much voltage drop on a longer cable. More length doesn't affect data as much, but there's a pretty short length to get that charging current that you want.

Indeed it is. The only (safe) option for you would to pick up one of the extension cables that plugs into the charger itself. Apple sells it for 19.00, but you can probably find one cheaper somewhere else. . . Though I personally wouldn't go with anything other than an Apple branded one, regardless of cost. The cheap ones just scare me.
