Messed around with it today in the Microsoft store.
I enjoyed it! Screen is not bright at all but I am used to a Note 3 so yea lol.
It was pretty snappy for a small device like that and I liked the windows OS after messing with it for a while.
Thinking of grabbing it for $59

I second the Lumia 520, it's a nice little phone. Even better with the 8.1 update
How do you get this update as it says it is not out until August for the 520?

Only thing I don't like with the new update is the people integration. Cortana works great for me.

It is a great device at a great price. The battery life has been really good for me to.
So which of these options is it?:
Register as a developer:
Register as a Windows Phone Developer $19 USD, and publish apps in the Store
or
Register as a developer with App Studio Free, and create apps to run on your own Windows Phones
or
"Developer unlock" your phone:
Download the developer tools to register and "developer unlock" your phone

Having had a windows phone 8.1 device recently and testing it out on my lumia 928, I can say that it is quite a cool and has some awesome features. Battery takes a HUGE hit since it is in fact a beta. I'd say a moto x would be a perfect second device for you. Just saw one locally on craigslist for 200 bucks..
How long does your battery last after the 8.1 update?
I haven't used the Lumia 520 in a while, I use my Lumia 1020 now. Haven't had the chance to test battery life. I get about close to 50% around 7hrs and that's with me using iheart radio for a good 4 hours.
