Haiti and Turkey (and for that matter most 'third world' nations) have 'optional' building codes, if they have any at all.

I was recently in San Francisco and was freaking about earthquakes but then realized that the hotel we were staying in was a much older one and probably has seen its share of quakes and is still standing. I took note of the stairwells and kept my phone handy, jic. Still I couldn't help wondering what would be left of the fantastic scenery if the 'big one' hit. (It was interesting, speaking of scenery, to see the helicopter taping the protesters and see the same helicopter hovering in the air)

Nothing happened that week which was good. Amen to the earthquake freaking people out. I remember being about 8 in Tacoma Washington and there being an earthquake. YIKES! :eek:
