I have a 2nd generation ATV mounted behind my tv in main family area. I recently killed cable and only using YouTube TV, ATV, Netflix and Prime but curious if I’d see any difference between 2nd gen and 3rd gen. Can I just use the 3rd gen remote on the 2nd gen ATV and use the 3rd gen ATV on a different tv with the 2nd gen ATV?

I like the d-pad vs mousepad on the remote and I’d rather not have to get the 2nd gen down from behind TV.

Assuming your TV is already Dolby Vision compatible then the only noticeable difference would be HDR10+ for most Prime content if your TV supports it, otherwise as far as streaming is concerned there’s no difference compared to what you see now.

Shoot...I think I may have the 1st Gen 4k as I noticed the 2nd gen also has the d-pad remote.

I still run the 2017 AppleTV 4k (1st gen). Haven't seen a reason to upgrade yet.

why not just buy the remote separately?

Same here...I'm new to the ATV world but my 2017 4K is light years ahead of my 4K Firestick Max and Android 2020 TV. It's faster, far more picture adjustments, video quality is better (over all) speed of apps is "night vs day" and so much more.

Regarding the remote, I'm pretty sure you can configure (learn) most remotes including those from other ATV boxes. I'm using a Hisense Android TV remote and occasionally using my Iphone 12 as a remote. I'm surprised I actually like it.

yep, I'm using the same Harmony Remote I have for years. Unfortunately, they discontinued the line but was easy to setup control for everything in my home theater. No Siri support, but my iPhone is always close by for speaking or typing.
