Hello, group.

This is exactly what the topic title says:

- I needed to transfer 2TB of files from a 3TB drive to a 5TB drive using my Mac M4 desktop computer with Tahoe OS 23.4.

After more than 30 hours, only 1.16TB have been transferred. The system tells me that more than 18 hours are still to go.

This can't be normal.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the process, considering I still have many more files to transfer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Sounds like one of the drives may be recognized as just USB 2.0, which can happen a lot of ways including cabling problems.

First - I'd suggest each drive be connected DIRECTLY to the Mac, not through a hub or docking station.
Second - disconnect any other unnecessary devices while doing this transfer.
Third - what format is the disk you're writing to? APFS or exFAT is best; some others might or might not be okay depending on some other factors (i.e. size of individual files and so forth)
Fourth - get a speed test on each of the disks (e.g. App Store > Blackmagic Disk Speed Test) to identify any potential issues

Thank you guys for both replies.

What, for me, is strange is the fact that I have transferred 5TB to a 6TB disk in much less time, some days ago. It took several hours, of course, but not this ridiculous amount of time!

The 3TB is, in fact, formatted in NTFS, which is the reason I'm transferring the files. I will, then, format the disk on exFat. But the transfer began with a decent speed and then, very slowly, the speed decayed and now it's desperately slow.
Both disks are directly connected to the Mac.

I noted your suggestions and will try to follow them.

Thanks again for your invaluable help

UPDATE:

What is really strange and I cannot understand why is a Core i5 Catalina I have is much more faster than the M4 Tahoe I had the copy earlier.

I changed to the Catalina and... problem solved (at least, for now)

Fingers crossed
