For me, I think 2.0 was more visually polished than 3.0. I've heard that the Mac OS team is no longer working on the iPhone UI... instead they have a new team and well, I think this new team isn't the greatest. Up until 3.0, I never really had much of a problem with the UI of the iPhone, but with 3.0, I seem to notice a lot of graphical glitches. Here they are so far:

1.) The text within the input field in Messages is 1 pixel too high. It looks unbalanced because there is so much white space under the characters. I've attached a mockup to show exactly what I mean. I consider this to be a bug because no other text field in the OS has text in it that is too high. All other text looks centered within it's field.

2.) In Messages on the main screen (where you view all current open conversations):

Notice the "Compose New Message" button's width. Then, turn the iPhone on it's side to switch to landscape mode. Then, when you switch back to portait again, the "Compose New Message" button stays long instead of going back to short (like it was when you first open Messages).

I've attached 2 images showing before and after turning it to landscape and back.

3.) When opening Maps, watch the bottom where the joined buttons are. The new joined buttons in 3.0 look like they shifted and distorted a little bit to the left. The new joined buttons lack definition on the right edge now. The easiest way to see this graphical glitch is to launch Maps and watch it change from the Default.png file to the actual running app. This bug is not only in Maps but system-wide as well... It's just easier to see it in Maps because of the Default.png image. Please check it out and see if you can make the joined buttons look like they did in 2.2.1.

Watch the animation to see what I mean:
    Joined-Buttons.gif

4.) When starting up Contacts, the startup Default.png file is different than the running app's interface.

Here's how you produce the bug: Scroll to the top of Contacts, then quit and re-launch it. You'll notice that the startup image is the old Contacts screen and not the same interface as the 3.0 version.

5.) In Mail: Selecting an email while in edit mode, then rotating the screen causes the selection to break up. See below for example:

First select the message while in edit mode
    [IMG]

Then turn the iPhone sideways to get this:

6.) There's also the weird icon bug. I got this one from this thread:

I've submitted the first 4 bugs to Apple already. Does anyone else have anything they'd like to add to my visual bug list? This thread is for graphical glitches and visual bugs... not stuff like "iPod app crashes".

Please feel free to post any more visual abnormalities or concerns. I'll try to keep this list as updated as possible.

I must also say... I'm not a big fan of the Messages Progress Bar being in the Title Bar. Progress Bars don't belong up there! It also covers up the person's name while you're sending. So if you're sending a couple of MMS messages and some texts, it will be covered up for a while and you can't glance up at the top to see who you're currently talking to. I think the black keyboard progress was much cleaner looking too. So what if you had to wait a second before you could type again. I didn't send messages rapidly anyways. Usually one is enough and if I have to type another, it usually takes a second to think about what I'm going to say anyways.

Anyone else hate the new progress bar location?

The downside is you couldn't send a picture or video and still continue the SMS conversation with the same person.

It's just too bad they couldn't find a different place for the progress.

I came up with this mockup:

"The text within the input field in Messages is 1 pixel too high." Classic.

This is why I come to MR, I love you guys. How the hell did you even see that?

EDIT: I want Spaz on my team for "find the differences between the two pictures".

Hah! Hey, I work for a label printing company in the pre-press department and my job is very visual and detail oriented. I get paid to find and fix graphical errors. I just have a good eye I guess. The craziest thing is... I notice these things without even TRYING to look for them. The second I installed 3.0, I saw about 12 graphical glitches without directly comparing them to 2.2.1. If it wasn't for the default.png file not matching in maps, I probably wouldn't have seen the joined buttons were different. Now that I've seen it, I can't unsee it. It's a catch 22.

Yeah, that would be a better spot. I think they put it in the header because that header belongs to each message grouping. So when you switch to another conversation how would you ensure that the status bar stays on the correct message? I guess there is probably a way, but they must have figured this way is easier for them...

I like your mockup, way better than the current method.

    Just rattling some ideas around.

How about, when you send a text message the progress bar was actually a blue circle next to the name in the main "messages" screen.
Similar to when previewing a song in the iTunes app but without the big "stop" button in the middle and much smaller.

Ive attached an example, my photoshop skills are not great so imagine there is no grey box around it, and it was positioned correctly and a better size...

I would like to contribute this thread.

    3.0: SMS w/ a Gmail user

Has not yet been reported to Apple as I haven't yet determined the exact conditions to reproduce that glitch.

I really like this idea... it looks great and I think it's superior to the new progress bar in 3.0

I actually submitted this mockup to Apple in feedback when 3.0 beta 1 came out. They most likely won't change it.

I think you are right, it looks unbalanced. But there is something wrong with your "mockup", you have not included g's and p's. You can see that the text is balanced because of the g's and p's, but if you include those characters in your mockup it will be unbalanced again. I think Apple chose the way it is as the best method of rendering the text.

They could shift the text 1px up as soon as p's and g's are typed though.

The loading indicator at beside the edge, 3g, or wifi indicator does not rotate correctly at times. I actually think this only happens on wifi because it rotates faster. I can't really take a pic of it because it moves... This does not always happen. As of right now I cannot figure out when or why this happens.

Visual bugs aside, I'm getting quite a few audio bugs. Text message sent noise plays twice sometimes, sync sound plays one and a half times, mail received sound sometimes doesn't play at all.

When I push the home button sometimes the app I'm in will lock up and then freeze and then kind of just crashes it's way back to the home screen. No nice little minimizing animation or whatever you want to call it.

Here's a new Mock-up. Dude, it still looks better to me. Look at any other text field in the iPhone OS and the lowercase letters are centered while the upper case is higher and the descenders are lower. Why would they favor the descenders over the main balance of the text?

Confirmed -- in my case the email received sound plays 1.5 times usually & that last .5 seconds sounds like Rice Krispies. snap, crackle, pop!

Key clicks also are spastic; they don't feel "in sync" w/ keystrokes.

Anyone else notice icons missing, such as free memory in this example?

Also anyone else notice improper icons being applied to applications?

Check out iMob... look closely. It has the FreeMemory Icon on it. But although I downloaded free memory, like 5 times, it always gets knocked off the iPhone, can't even find it in search.

So I'm not only losing apps out of no where, but the icons are in the wrong places.

    Yes I have restored.

I'm thinking about restoring to 2.2.1 again.

2.2.1 is more visually pleasing right now. I hope they work on the UI of 3.0 a little bit so that it is AT LEAST up to par with 2.2.1. I don't know why they had to change what they changed because it seems like it would have worked fine the way it was... why would they shift the text up that high and why didn't they change the default.png file for the apps?

Does it really bother you that much? To me it seems like the pros of 3.0 far outweigh the cons.
