3.1.2 Non-Activated Firmware question?

I have a iPhone 3G that I use on the AT&T network. I have found a Non-Activated Custom IPSW for version 3.1.2. If I do a restore with the non-activated jailbroken firmware, can I reactivate the phone through iTunes?

What is the point of having activated custom firmwares then?

For people who are not on official carriers; their phone gets hacktivated and they bypass the itunes activation process.

If you have an AT&T sim, it will activate the phone.
