I just want to make sure I do this right.

So I want to update to the new 3.1 update I know I lose my jailbreak but eventually they will crack it and at that time I will go back to a jailbroken iPhone.

I have gone through and removed all apps and features the jailbreak added etc.

So to go back to a vanilla iphone I need to go into the settings and mark "reset all content and settings" as this will removed and make it near impossible to see that I jailbroke correct (and while not required I should have it plugged in correct while this is happening.)

Then I can do the restore in iTunes, update iTunes then upgrade to the 3.1 firmware correct?

Just wanna make sure I'm doing it all correctly.

Just do a restore from Itunes to 3.1 directly. You don't need to do any of that other garbage...

You don't even need to DFU restore. Just restore as normal to the new version and start as a new phone rather than restoring from a backup. Granted, you'll lose your application data but that will ensure you remove all traces of a previous jailbreak. Also make sure your contacts and other information is backed up so you can sync it afterwards.

Crap everyone is giving me a different answer :/

Sorry I know there is the iPhone hacks forum but I didnt know if that would be the proper place.

qpid Just making sure I didn't read what you wrote the wrong way but are you saying to just update to 3.1 and tell it to update it as a "new iPhone" or do the restore first as a new iPhone and then update to OS 3.1?

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

You don't HAVE to set it up as a new phone. I usually don't. ;)

Yes, updating to 3.1 via iTunes will get you back to a "stock" iPhone. You can choose to restore as new or from backup. In either case your jailbreak is gone and you are finished.

Hopefully you've captured the IBSS and IBEC files already, so when you do want to jailbreak again it will be possible. If you chose the Cydia help option, Saurik is guarding them for you!

Actually you do have to set it up as a new phone. Why do you think people restore and are able to keep custom carrier logos and battery percentages?

Safest bet is to restore normally or DFU restore and start as a new phone. Restoring from a backup might leave leftover information on your phone.

So there is no need to do the "reset all files and content" setting the one that takes a couple hours to reset?

If so awesome thats what I wanted to know and I will click the restore and set up as new iPhone option when I get home.

No you will not need to do that. The only time you should ever do that is if you're selling your phone.

Oh ok. I understood it that you needed to do that so it would not be noticed that you jailbroke it before (when going in for warranty exchanges)

Nope. A clean restore/DFU restore will be fine for warranty exchanges. I've experienced this myself.

If you just want to get warranty service, then all you need is to restore. The "reset files and content" is for protecting the security of your personal information. If you take your iphone to Apple to get it serviced, what often happens is they will swap it with a refurbished model. Now, Apple is supposed to wipe your personal info from your iphone before they do anything with it, but if you want the extra security, you might consider wiping the info using "reset files and content" before taking it in. But if you just want to make sure your warranty won't be voided, all you need is to restore.

Ya doign that before I go in would be a given I was just wondering in case for some weird strange reason 3.1 update failed and bricked it. I know thats next to impossible but Im the "Better safe than sorry" and "covering all my bases" type.

Awesome thank you all for your help!

Well the update to 3.1 has no reason to fail and it's just about impossible to truly brick one of these. Just operator error in not knowing how to get out of a restore/Dfu state back to operating status.

    Setup as new phone OR

wait until the dev team tells us what to do. For all we know updating to 3.1 (then JBing) could break things.

Well I will probably be waiting a few months then to make sure everything is ironed out if at all.

But I do want to move to 3.1 (app placement in itunes 9 being one of the reasons) amongst others.

Thanks for the info folks! I cleared out everything that I added through cydia and restarted my iPhone its in a state as if it was just freshly jailbroken.

    Thanks again guys!

You dont need to do anything . Just update. The jailbreak will be gone and everything set back to factory except for Apps you downloaded from the app store and that is after you put the phone back from the latest backup.
No need to do anything before you update.
