After months of indecision and some great advice from those here, I've finally got hold of a 3.2 quad core cMP mid-2012 in mint condition and have absolutely no buyers remorse - its perfect for my needs but needs upgrading.

I want to max out the RAM to 32gb but Crucial's website has me confused - their advisor tool for my specific machine takes me to the following page but only has 4gb modules:

They also say a mid-2012 quad can accept these PC3-12800 1.35v modules. Can anyone confirm if they will work?

1.35v modules won't give 1333MHz when you use 4 of them. Crucial don't seem to have 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC DIMMs in their store any more.

You want these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Te...1418255009&sr=8-10&keywords=8gb+ddr3+1333+ecc

Or if the value branding puts you off:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-...hz)-240-pins-ecc-registered-cl-9-9-9-pc-apple

Faster memory downclocks appropriately so if you would rather buy from Crucial then you want one of these:

No ECC: http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/memory/ct102464ba160b
Unbuffered ECC: http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/memory/ct102472ba160b

There is no reason to buy unbuffered or registered over the other from a performance stand point (not in the Mac Pro anyway) so just get the cheapest you are happy with. I'd get the Kingston.

edit: just recalled the Xeon W3565 only supports 1066MHz memory anyway, but I'd still get 1333MHz+ if you ever want to upgrade. Crucial only do Quad-Ranked DIMMs at 1066MHz and they aren't cheaper.

Also you have options on eBay like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/32GB-4x8G...erComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item462c378067
