I have a first generation 15" MacBook Pro (1.83GHz) maxed out with 2 gigabytes of RAM, which is the official amount it supports.

However, I'm wondering is there any possibility of increasing the amount of RAM, e.g. to 4GB? Has anyone ever tried? Did the computer detect the additional RAM?

    Thanks

It won't be detected or read. 2GB was the hardware limit for that model.

There's a useful guide to Intel Mac RAM here on MacRumors.

Sorry, you are stuck with 2GB max.

Thank you, Scarlet Fever and OllyW.

Looks like a MacBook upgrade is in the cards for 2009 (or whenever Snow Leopard is out!)

Is that a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor?

It's a Core Duo, it tells you in the guide I linked to. ;)
