wow times have changed lol... i think at 3 i was playing with legos and a wooden wagon... LMAO

I credit lego's for my current career. I have done all the repairs and maintenance on my vehicles since I was 16 years old. I build my own computers and perform repairs on major household appliances.
3 years is way too young to throw a electronic gadget in front of their face. Ipad's are not babysitters. They need skills that are useful in life by building and following instruction. They need human interaction when it comes to reading; not a faceless gadget. Kids that young could accidently stumble accross porn by accident. Man, I thought 10 years old was too early. But 3. That's pretty crazy.

Think of it this way people

iPad Mini- $360 w/ tax inc.

or

Private Tutor- $100 per visit 2 times a week.

Whats cheaper/ effective... :)

Both will teach the kid some stuff, and only one is cheaper (iPad) and "Funner"

This is just nuts. A $360 electronic gadget vs a parent that can do the same for free. What is this tutor teaching your child, rocket science. You would rather throw a gadget in your childs face then spend quality time with him/her? You can't just throw screens at kids hoping that they turn out fine. It just does not work like that. And putting a price tag on your child's learning experience to justify a toy is wrong.
This thread is so depressing. I'm out.

The iPad is not a babysitter, it's a great tool for learning in ADDITION to play and other learning methods. Who's said that giving your kid an iPad means you never persnoally engage or interact with your child, or stop reading regular books to him\her? I don't give him an iPad and let him use it unsupervised over long periods of time. Most of the time we use it together, and then afterwards we read a regular book, or go build a snowman outside.

The iPad is a great learning resource. Although I agree buying one just for a 3 year old is silly, using the one you have with a 3 year old can be a very valuable resource.

My 2 year old loves both the iPad 2 and 3 we have. The 2 is his exclusively although he takes my iPad 3 at times.

I am amazed he what he learns on the iPad. He's learned the solar system, fruits, colors, alphabet etc on the iPad.

My son is 28 months old and has been using iPad and iPhone since he was 12 months. I read books to him at night on the iPad as well.

So don't knock someone for getting an iPad for their 2-3 year old exclusively.

I actually ordered an iPad mini for my 2 year old also.

My kids use and love my iPad - I think its a great tool to help them learn and also have fun. They're now 6 and they've been using my iPhone/iPad for years

My 4 years old still enjoy reading books. Time to encourage to move on to e-books?

I would think, that most kids with their own ipad have alloted time to use it? If I let my 3-year old have free access, he would most likely use it too much. So he knows that using the ipad is a reward for among other things, good behaviour.

exactly how how I use it for him....he only gets it on the weekend, but only as a reward. I also send him to his grandparents with it because it has all his movies in it and with their Appletv he can watch the movies he likes at their house as well on a bigger tv. Also, my wife and I travel a ton, so he actually has picture link icons on his homescreen to facetime us, which he does when we are gone to talk. Like I said he has an ipod touch for most of these tasks, but the point of the ipad is to not have him looking at such a small screen and strain his eyes or neck....

Another quick point to the naysayers...my child is very much an active 3 year old who gets his fair share of outside time as well. He has a great rock collection which he fishes for himself, rides ATV's through the woods and even runs kids races when I run my 5k's. So im not giving him an ipad to occupy his time....he gets this as a learning tool and to watch movies from time to time. My brother who is a Math teacher was amazed that a 3 year old knows shapes such as a trapezoid and parallelogram....this is attributed to the ipad/ipod. At my son's preschool, they have 5 iPads and 2 Androids per classroom which are used as learning tools, so no matter what, he is surrounded by this....my father is a computer engineer, so growing up, I always had a computer in my house, all the way back to a commodore 128. This is just the evolution of that.

Was wondering why this thread was getting so much action from the title I felt like it wasn't gonna last but I see wow this got a little out of hand

If that's the case, I don't understand why they need their own, vs. just sharing yours when you're using it together. While what you say is not bad, I'm willing to bet it is used as a babysitter or the "sit down and shut up machine" for many kids out there.

For one, i dont have children. And 2 if i did have children i would def give them electronic gadgets as young as 3. By the time they are 5 or 6 they will be able to plug the ipad into the computer and figure things out for themselves on itunes/ the internet. Something i wasnt fortunate of until i was 14-15.

Technology is the future, and No Offense, but older people dont keep up with gadgets as fast as young people do. Giving your child the latest is just like giving them the best. :)

This isnt the old times where there was no technology, if technology is the future, and we arent prepared for the change then what will happen to us?

i agree, take my brother for example.. He's 18 and has so social life because he was spoiled at a very very young age. Now he has no motivation, on meds, no job, and sits in his room all day on the computer and plays games..

So basically the parents are to blame not the flat screen TV, Xbox, ipad, etc...

The reason he gets one of his own is that for one, all the kid apps accumulating on my iPad is starting to eat up space for my stuff. Also, the screen is always greasy from jelly and yoghurt stained fingers. My boss gave me an iPad, so I really did not spend the extra money on one for him. It sort of just fell in my lap. I would most likely not get one for him if I didn't happen to get one for free.

I'm sure there are kids out there that are being plopped down in front of an iPad screen for no reason. And in front of the TV. And their playstations and computer. My kids is not one of those kids, and that's all that matters to me.

My thought is that everyone at the dinner table will be playing Angry Birds which is pretty sad. Sometimes I wish it was 1890 and I was on a farm with just my family and no electronic gadgets. I would be closer to my family and friends. Imagine how different we would appreciate people instead staring at screens all day. But it's not 1890 and the world is ruled by gadgets, internet and debt.
But what you're doing is overkill.

this is bizarre. You are twisting OPs post to fit your own ranting. Op stated that he is buying an Ipad mini to help his kids learn. Where did he states that he allow the kid to play any game at the dinning table??? You owe OP an apology. If you don't like the world around you, go talk to your psychologist or kick your dog but there is no reason to rain on the parade of a dad who try to help his kids to be more competitive when the kid grow up.

And can we go back to the original question rather than debating if a three-year old is allowed an iPad Mini?

I think the debate IS the common thought here. :)

Though I can appreciate one not wanting sticky or greasy fingers on a work/adult iPad. Kids ruin everything... I guess I would too if I don't pay for mine and I knew my parents wouldn't trade me for anything in the world. ;)

For a 3 year old seriously  ? The world must be changing much faster-I need to look more out of the window

Yeah no kidding now there are apparently 9 year old's with iPhone 4S's

----------

My 3-year old is officially getting my 3rd gen for christmas, I am so crazy sick of the constant whining to use mine, and the never ending greasy screen after he's used it.
The world is different yes, kids with ipads is no longer a gasping shock. He's learning heaps from all the great apps. And it's always a good thing to bargain with! "Eat your dinner, or no ipad before bed!" He always chows down! :D

And not to worry, it still looks like a LEGO factory exploded in our house. ;)

Hand me downs are understandable, if you aren't the reselling type. But buying an iPad Mini for a 3 year old....?
