The black rapid strap is a must and well worth the money if you're lugging an SLR of any size around for more than an hour or so IMO. Whats $60 compared to the DSLR investment overall?

Having said that I will echo what a few others have said. You should investigate maybe just taking 1 small camera. Last year I took my 5DII, a couple lenses, my flash, etc. to Turks and Caicos. I also took a (waterproof) gopro hero 3 black. Guess what we used 99% of the time? Yep, the gopro. I thought I was taking it for video and I ended up doing more stills with it than anything. It was cheap (relatively speaking anyway), water/dust/sand proof, and the super wide angle made for awesome shots. Heck, the "selfies" my wife and I took together looked like someone else took the photo!

The whole experience made me reevaluate my camera situation. Too often I ended up just bringing the iPhone (which is decent in its own regard but pales in comparison to a dedicated camera) because I didn't want to lug an SLR, worry about theft, etc. I am in the process of selling the gear in my sig; I bought a Fujifilm X100s and not only does the thing seriously rock, its tiny compared to an SLR. APS-C sensor, fantastic glass, and super compact. 95% of what a leica is, a fraction of the cost, and smaller to boot. But I digress.

Point is, make sure you are enjoying the vacation rather then fretting about gear. It sucks being the person documenting all the other people having fun!

When I was a young teen my dad took us on a driving trip trip from Ohio to the West coast and back. I was not the photo guy I am today and really wish I could have taken more pictures.

But when you were a young teen (or younger) were you bothered that you didn't take more pictures? Your regrets now are irrelevant. They are a reflection of your interests now, not what you were into back then.

The OP knows his kids and what they are into…… but from my experience of working with youngsters (and having been one once), a few point & shoot snaps is all that most are interested in. The thoughts of others suggest similar experience.

Anyway, the OP will probably have made his decision by now. It would be interesting to hear his thoughts….. and to see some of his pictures on return.

Hi everyone, I do truly appreciate the tip and advice given.

I was in Japan for 2 weeks - work, came back last Friday.
So busy catch up a work, plus had to install new electric brakes onto the trailer, the old ones were so bad.

Will post shots when return, we are off the grid for 10 of the 21 days staying at campgrounds w/o electricity......

Peace everyone.

Dale - I made a DIY bike rack so we could take 5 mountain bikes! It fits onto the pop up trailer.
I also hooked up with a retired friend who lives in South Dakota, he has a horse ranch, so old time BBQ and kids get to ride his horses also....

Enjoy the trip mtbdudex and safe travels! This time last year we were in the Tetons and I wish we were there now. Especially in this 95+ oppressive Georgia heat.
