After 3 years it appears the iPhone 12 hardware is no great change. Leakers have said Flat sides, Lidar scanner and 5G However that appears to be it. Am I missing something

iPhone is a very mature product and in-fact smartphones are in general. There's not much more they can do that would be considered a great change without going super experimental and making the phone more fragile (like with a folding display).

^^ same here hanging on to iPhone 6S Plus Since October 2015. Can’t pass that ugly notch and fat camera bump.

Once you start using the phone, you don't even notice the notch is there, camera bumps aren't going away any time soon unfortunately.

People upgrading from a iPhone x and up, won't notice big changes in future models.

iPhone 8 and lower, its like you're getting a whole new user experience, No home button good riddance, Face ID works 100% of the time compared to touch id wet fingers rough skin, good riddance.

Swipe gestures is awesome, makes using the phone feel more natural and faster.

Also they’re fat obese and gained a lot of weight over the years which’s another big no no for me.

3 years waiting? Hardware has gotten better every year as it does in tech. So not sure i get this thread.

Obviously must be an appreciation thread that the OP feels their current phone is good enough that they don't feel a need or even a want to upgrade every year. A show of happiness that they got something so good that it's lasted them longer than it apparently used to...

On a more serious note, I never understood upgrading yearly. Even disregarding how wasteful and environmentally unfriendly that is, it's not like it's ever been that big a deal year-to-year. It's a phone. Just a phone.

That mindset is most people’s view. the average user will just upgrade when their contract ends or when the phone is not usable. Only techies will upgrade every year.

This exactly.

It’s more the software that needs more of a focus lately, the hardware is top shelf and works great, if anything, it’s under utilized.

I love how much heavier and thick my 11 Pro Max is, it allowed them to fit a much larger battery, I think they should continue like this, it’s worlds apart from previous iPhones in terms of battery life.

I'm a techy. My phone is an appliance. My first iPhone was the 3G and I've had 4 in total. Even that I consider a bit much. I'd much rather save up that money for some more interesting gear than just a phone; Like Macs. But that's just my view. - My initial comment on this was more just a bit of fun, taking the piss a bit anyway :)

Yeah not saying all techies will upgrade but people who need latest and greatest will. As let’s face it not everybody wants to spend £700-£1300 on a phone every year

This. And because it is a mature product in a market that has already been consolidating over the last years, you don't have to offer groundbreaking changes to get people buying it. You have to satisfy the different needs of the customers like budget, form factor, performance etc. This is why we've seen such a huge extension of the Apple product line up recently, which works pretty good for them - at least at this point in time. Ironically, this exact extension of the product line up almost killed the whole company back in the early days of Apple.

Definitely.
I see myself sticking will my 11 Pro Max for at least 2-3 years so that an upgrade actually feels like an upgrade again!

Totally. Plus the price hike? OMG. Also, when the review section of the headphone adapters was still visible on the Apple Store there were literally thousands of complaints. Seems like they break easily. I have several wired headphones which I love dearly...

Agreed. I am holding on to my 11 Pro Max for as long as the battery continues to be this good

Will probably get the iPhone that launches in late 2022.

I’m not entirely sure what we are missing that we haven’t currently got? Smartphones are mature products and really we can only really expect tweaks rather than groundbreaking innovations.

I get a kick out of the people crying about the notch yet don’t own the phone.
I've never cried about the notch as it's never bothered me.

Now, the camera bump. Yeah, do a search here and you'll find me whining about it for days. Fugly boils on the back of the phone.

Welcome, nice of you to join me.

I've been waiting since September 2013 for Apple to create a new iPhone I wanted. They launched the iPhone 5s with Space Gray and no black so I was out. Then the 6 series came along with it's fugly camera bump. The 7 made the camera bump worse and the 8 and X doubled down on it. Now we have the back of iPhones with camera bumps that look like Bender from Futurama.

I got so tired of waiting I went to Android last year and started waiting it out there…again.

Sooner or later this camera boil as a design feature will be over.

I try to hold onto my phone until it starts irritating me on a daily basis. Once it starts causing me issues daily, its an upgrade year. Try to keep them for at least two years. Will be going from a xs max to whatever crap they come out with this year. I was very happy with my 8+, have been very happy(until recently) with my XS max. Really hoping whatever they come out with this year has fewer bugs, AND is as pleasant to use as my Max and 8+ were when new.

The boil has gotten bigger and I fear it is here to stay for some time.

I always got a kick outta my 8+ because it reminded me of bender or the cylons from battlestar galactica..

In addition, compared to carrying a dedicated camera around... the camera bump is pretty minor.

Me neither. Just get a new phone every year and be done with it.

The Apple Upgrade Plan makes it really easy to trade in your phone (0 waste) as well. My wife and I have enjoyed being able to upgrade if we want to or keep our phones if we want.

Square sides has me very interested. I want to use my phone nekkid but round sides make that difficult. But more important, I'd like USB C on my phone. But we'll see. Apple makes upgrading so easy on the iUP plan.
