Do the IR sensors on the iPhone X stay on all the time when using the iPhone ?

I hear its only when during faceid but then some people talk about it detecting your face during the use of apps

In addition to FaceID, I think it is also used for selfie portraits. The dot projector is what makes it a "TruWhDepth" camera. Whether or not it's always projecting is a good question. Seems like it would turn on for wake-up in order to unlock the phone, and then switch off until you use something like portrait selfie mode or an app that can use it to better map AR features (Animoji or the new Snapchat filters).

Probably not, apple probably figured out a way not to have them on all the time. they are fanatical about battery life, even if they still fail at getting it good
