30 Inch Dell hook up question

Two questions regarding set up with the Dell 3007 ?

1. In order to have the correct resolution (2560x1600) on a 30 inch monitor, one has to have the USB end of the DisplayPort Dual link adapter connected and not just the DVI end as I understand it. Where do we connect the USB end to, Monitors USB port or the Mac Mini USB port ? 😕

Mini purchase soon, so if anyone in the know would be appreciated.

2) Also, there are Single DVI to displayport adatpers without a USB cable attached on Newegg and Amazon, and wonder if that would work with the correct supported resolution as well. 😕

I believe the USB cable is required ONLY if you want to utilize the monitor's built in USB ports (as a USB hub) and card readers with your computer.
 
You will need a Dual Link DVI cable to support the 2560 x 1600 res. Single Link DVI cables only support upto the 1920 x 1200 resolution.

As you have said is a 3007 then would actually get 1280 x 800 rather then the 2560 x 1600 with a single link DVI cable. This is dues to the poor scaling ability on the 3007.

As others have said here already then you need to run a USB cable from the mini to the USB type B style port on the Dell Monitor, ie the smaller squarer style connection, as opposed to the longer flatter connector that will be found on the back of the mini. That plugs into the monitor and allows the card reader and usb ports on the 3007 to be used.

Many Dell 30" monitors have a (full-size) DisplayPort port on them. If yours does, you only need a $7 cable (mini-DP to DP) and can skip the $99 dual-link DVI adapter.

It is the 3008WFP Model that introduced the DisplayPort. With the 3007 model that the thread starter said he has then only has the Dual Link DVI port to connect into.

Unfortunately will need the expensive Dual Link DVI Adaptor.

This is true. The 3007 does not have the DisplayPort, but I have another question regarding the Apple displayport cables.

One cable that I can see goes into the Mini Mac displayport input slot, but there is another cable that looks like a USB and where does this go ? Into the Mac Mini or on another USB port that I have on the Dell 3007.

I do have a flat USB cable from my PC USB input and the other end is a square type connector that is on the monitor input slot that was mentioned by mcnallym above, but that USB cable on the displayport cable is throwing me off some what as to where to insert it. Anyone ? 😕

Having looked on the Apple Website for a picture of the Dual DVI Link Adaptor then I can see that there is a DVI port and also USB port next to it.

I would make an educated guess that the way you hook up is as follows.

Plug the DVI cable from the monitor into the adaptor.
Run the USB Cable that you currently have between the monitor and the mac, between the monitor and the USB port connection next to the DVI connector in the adaptor.
Plug the mini-dp port from the adaptor into mac.
Plug the usb port from the adaptor into the mac.
 
I'll give that a try when the Mini arrives. Many thanks again mcnallym for the assist. That one got me and was just going to try different connections to see which one worked. Wonder if that DisplayPort cable has instructions with it for my first Apple product ? 😀
 
Apart from being a pass-through port, the USB connection provides 5V power to the MiniDP-DLDVI adapter.

That's exactly how Mine is hooked up and the DELL 3007WFPHC Display works perfectly.
