iGary, I think I know exactly what you're talking about. Its called "DVI noise" or something like that. I saw it when I went to the SF Apple store, and I asked one of the sales person. The ACD with the problem (Well, actually, there was only one in the store) had the default wallpaper, and when activating dashboard, you could see pixels stick out some weird grainy blue. He switched the wallpaper to a solid color, and the issue wasn't visible... The store guy says "See, its only with certain images"... Oviously, he didn't know anymore than I did, so I pretended it was acceptable for the ACD to be unable to display certain images. I seriously doubt its a video card issue...

I know the 30" is a beautiful "looking" display, but
this sounds like a bad production run and I would just get my money back until they can assure you that the defect has been corrected and advise you which serial numbers are affected.

If that is not possible, then I would insist on a bench test before you leave the store.

If I were in your shoes, I'd take the video card with me too just to have Apple rule out a third party problem.

I'm honestly thinking you should return the 30",
buy a PAIR of Dell 2405's AND an ATI X800 series
GPU and still have some change left over.

I totally agree.

Twin Dell 2405FPW > one 30" ACD

Until you want to look at a 12MP image at 50% resolution.

Exactly...Normally all the fine color work at my design agency is done on Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT's, the only LCD's that hold up res and colorwise are the ACD's.

We waited for years and looked at all the LCD's as they came out and the ACD's so far are the only ones that hold up to our scrutiny.

Dells are fine if you don't need to do really fine color separation at higher resolutions and are a good value for the money.

that sucks iGary... hopefully it will all work out for you in the end

my 23 incher had a column of pixels die. Making a green line that went down the screen.

brought it in and it went into repair. got i back plugged it into my G5.... no picture

lug that beast back. The logic board "died".

Went back into repair again for a week and a half. I had no computer those weeks.... i lost like 10 pounds :p

Got it back worked like a charm :D

iGary,

Let us know ( as I am sure you will) how things are going with this. I am not planning on getting the HUGE display, but I am in the market for it's little brother for use for my Video and Photo work that I need to do.

Best of luck!

Wow. It seems Apple is having a lot of problems with all their ACDs. Hmmmm....

I'm really starting to get bugged by all these quality control gremlins turning up at Apple.

Somebody's A$$ needs to get canned and replaced by someone who understands why Apple's reputation
for quality is critical in this market.

If we can't count on Apple's finest products, who can we count on?

Definitely check the video card. Apple says that all three Radeon cards support the 30" but I noticed only the GeForce 6800 GT DDL can drive two of them. Maybe this is why I haven't had any problems?

I have a 30" ACD and the 6800 Ultra and they have worked flawlessly for me. Once calibrated the color is pretty spot on. YMMV. The little quote below is the only difference I can detect in the 4 cards except the 6800 GT DDL's ability to drive two 30's.

well that is true, but i also upgraded my card to the Nvidia 6800, so i don't know why i am having this problem....oh well, hopefully the 2nd one is better

As everyone says it could be a bad production run, I may be lucky. I purchased mine about 5 months ago.

It really would suck to spend 3K and have problems with not just 1 ACD but 2 or 3?!? Ouch...I understand iGary's frustration.

Wow, sorry to hear that iGary. You should ask the store manager if he would give you a charge back...maybe using his friends and family discount just for the "HUGE" inconvenience and you did just have back surgery. Best of luck with the next display ;)

Really sorry for bumping this really old thread, but I'm at my wits end with this problem.

So I assume the replacement iGary got had sorted it. /me pokes iGary
As check this thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=221104&tstart=30
People have had up to 7 units replaced, had graphic cards replaced, logic boards/memory/cpu's the whole lot and the problems still remain.

My problem only happens from time to time when the display comes out of sleep, not in long periods of use or whatever is on the screen. Only when the screen awakes from sleep it triggers it.

Display after display has been replaced with people and the same problem. Sadly nobody seems to know what the cause is...
