I thought it was always 24 months...
You could just pay off the reminder of the balance at the 24 month mark.
But if the phone is paid off, you should be able to upgrade when ever you want, so I'm not seeing the issue. On the 24 month one you can upgrade after 12 months, on the 30 month you can upgrade after 24 months. Big difference.

The OP is on a 30 month program, he now wants to switch to 24 months, presumably so he can upgrade sooner. If he pays off his phone at the 24 month mark (while being on the 30 month lease), he will be able to upgrade sooner....The whole point of doing a Next 24 plan is so you can upgrade yearly without paying the full amount for the phone. Not sure what you're not understanding about upgrading after 12 payments vs 24 payments.

Because once you pay off the phone, you can then sell it.Who would want to pay more? $500 vs $800

You're getting an iPhone for 500 dollars, you're leasing it for 500 and then needing to trade it in. Buy owning it, you have more options in front of you.
I made this mistake last year. I went to the store and it took some time on their part but was able to change from 30 to 24 months. I chatted with a rep on Friday and they said I can change it after I receive the phone.Same here. I screwed up. I was in the 24 every year plan and just assumed when I preordered I’d be thrown into the same plan. The saying about the word assume is true.
I just chatted with AT&T and figured we could change it before activation, no can do. So my plan is to pay extra and pay it off in twelve and then sell it before the next upgrade.
This whole AT&T experience has been a nightmare as usual.
Thanks for the confirmation!
Amazing that they don’t know their own plans and service.
