There are many threads on it...

The easiest is to spend $30 and buy QuickTime Pro which will convert it for you...

alternatively, you can Google it...

I would spend the $30 on QT Pro as there is much better software out there for free. I already have QT Pro and I have never been successfully been able to use it to convert movies to the ipod format. As said above just do a google search and try out the software you find, but I guess since you are on XP you have to beware of viruses so maybe ask the same question on a friendly PC forum.

does QT pro import DVDs or will it only convert the file to ipod friendly format.....

It will not import dvds to video.most dvds will have copy protection on them, you can use software that will get rid of that by ripping the video onto your computers harddrive.

Use
http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.download.com and search for software,

look at these guides
