Like most users, I have several 32-bit apps. Some of these, which are identified as 32-bit by both CleanMyMac X and by Apple's System Report, will start in Mojave without popping up the warning that they need to be updated in order to run in Catalina. Most of the 32-bit apps identified by those utilities DO pop up that warning before they start.
One of these apps is the Scan utility for my Epson AIO, which I cannot do without (and Epson Support is far worse than useless in answering questions about the need for an update, possibly because the printer drivers have already been updated to 64-bit).
What am I to make of this discrepancy? Might these programs somehow continue to work in Catalina?

No 32 bit apps will work in Catalina. Chances are you don't really need the Epson app. Apple's Preview will probably handle scanner just fine. Go to System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners. If you don’t see your scanner in the list at the left, click the Add button. If a pop-up menu appears, choose Add Printer or Scanner. Select your scanner, then click Add. Scanning is then done from the Preview app File > Import from...

Thanks to chabig and VerizonLover.
Both suggestions are appreciated. However, Image Capture (also accessible through Preview) is pretty feature-poor compared to my Epson software, and the version of VueScan that matches the features in my Epson Scan software costs $100. Wow!
I guess I'll install Catalina, and see if the software I have works under it. It may because it does not display the warning about needing to upgrade to 64-bit version before Catalina. However, if it doesn't, I'll just have to consider both of these options. Of course, the third option if it doesn't work will be to use Image Capture temporarily and wait, hoping that Epson upgrades it. They should, considering that the printer/scanner is only a few years old, but that doesn't mean that they will.

Open Activity Monitor ... Open CPU tab (it defaults here) ... Right click on column row and select "Kind". That will show you which app are 64 bit vs 32 bit. *all* 32 bit apps will fail in Catalina.

While running Catalina Public beta #9 I received several Epson updates. Not sure if any of them were for scanning as I do not use that feature with my Epson all in one printer.

Well, that will give you a list of all the 32-bit apps that are actually running at the time, but it will tell you nothing about apps that are not running.

The proper way to do this is to select from the Apple menu, "About this Mac." From that dialog box, click on "System Report." From that window select Software/Applications. Be prepared to wait a while, but that will give you a list of all the applications installed on your Mac with their "bitness." Just click the column header, "64-bit," to bring all the 32-bit applications to the top.
The problem is that Epson Scan IS identified as 32-bit by that process, but it does NOT give a warning that it needs to be updated to a 64-bit version before updating to Catalina, as almost all 32-bit apps should and do.

THAT is very reassuring. Thanks very much for that information.

I agree this is the offical 'proper' way. But it only checks the main executable within each app bundle. Some/many apps include additional executables and/or plugins and these can be 32-bit even if the main executable is 64-bit. In some cases this does not matter (e.g. if the 32-bit plugin is never used), but in others it does.

Scanner software seems to be particularly riddled with extra components which may or may not work with Catalina.

All the Epson software that wasn't compatible has a circle with a line through it. Have you tried to update the Epson software? They have new compatible scanner software for Epson printer and scanners.

Just buy VueScan by Hamrick Software.

More than likely it supports your AIO.
No need. All they need to do is update their Epson software.

I've never seen any Epson-program icons with the circle-and-line.
I sure have tried updating. I've visited the Epson Support site a dozen times over the last few months. Today, there is a new scan driver for Image Capture (literally dated today). That, of course, is quite different from Epson Scan, which is still at its latest version, 4.0.1, from March, 2016. There's nothing newer. Perhaps Epson has deprecated it in favor of the Image Capture utility built into macOS, but that would be an awful shame, because I'd have to give up some nice functionality to switch to it.
There's nothing else to do but upgrade and and see if Epson Scan might work in Catalina. There's reason to hope. I'm certainly not going to pay $100 for VueScan.

I have an ES-300WR scanner and WF-2750 AIO. I have an Epson Scan 2 driver (and OCR component) that works with Catalina, that came out August 17th. Pretty much every driver/software has been updated recently to support Catalina, except for firmware update. You can see the circle with line through it.

My system (10.14.6) still shows InkServer and quickloookd32, both by Apple, as my only remaining 32 bit apps. I have not been on the Catalina beta, maybe someone here knows - do these get replaced in the upgrade to Catalina, or should I take some action, like deleting them?

Those are parts of macOS, you don't have to remove them manually. Anyway, InkServer will be removed, and quickloookd32 is the 32bit version of quickloookd, and will be removed too in Catalina.

I found Epson Scan 2 for download while looking at the download page for an Epson AIO newer than mine. I installed, hoping that it would give access to both Epson Scan programs and work with my WP-4530. It's installer completed "successfully," but, sadly, I cannot find the program anywhere on my Mac.

Do you see the line-in-circle icon on Mojave or on Catalina beta?

Under Software, you should see a folder called "Epson Software". Open that folder and it should be there.

No Epson Scan 2, only Epson Scan (the old name). That file says that it was modified on 2 October 2019, but when you launch the app, it says it's version 4.0.1.0, the same old program from 2016 or so. Like I said, I did a search for "Epson Scan 2" on the Applications folder and found nothing.
I'm still hopeful that it'll work under Catalina because even though it's identified as a 32-bit app by two different methods, launching it brings up NO warning about requiring an update for Catalina.

Install Catalina to a different partition, then try to install the software. You don’t have to overwrite your working partition to test it out.

Did you download the combo installer (that installs everything) or just the individual Scan 2 software (under Drivers and/or Utilities)? You may want to use the updater software and see if that works.

Wait, does the 32 bits programs still working on Catalina ? I have 2-3 games who are 32 bit only that I don't want to lose.

As an aside, I've found Go64 a really useful tool for determining what's 64 bit and what isn't.

I used an individual installer for Scan 2. I cannot use the combo installer because that might install a driver that won't work for my printer.
The Epson Update program shows that I'm up to date — i.e., that the 4.0.1.0 is the latest software for my AIO.
Interestingly the Epson UNinstaller program lists both Epson Scan and Epson Scan 2 as items that can be uninstalled separately. For some reason, I guess that Scan 2, which I believe includes OCR, is simply not compatible with my Work Force Pro 4530 or is coded not to work with it or coded so that it requires a different printer driver to be functional.

Looks like you just have a "Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v4.0.1.0", which contains you scanning software. Looks like you may need to OCR after you pdf a scan.

I really don't care about the OCR feature. That's not what I was after in trying to install Epson Scan 2. I just want a fairly-full-featured scanning program that will work under Catalina. Fingers crossed.
