great news

why the **** would you need that much?

Why not? it's not like you need it, but I'd love to have 32gb ram. If you have it you will use it. In my case, doing vfx work, I could have many more clips at high quality ready to play at real time, as they are stored in RAM, at the same time that I run applications.

So it's not only about having memory hungry applications running simultaneously, regardless of wether theyr'e 32 or 64 bits in the near future, it's also about heavy media or, in general, data, ready and available to play with in real time.

I'd say the RAM limitation is only a budget limitation for many.

Right, but again, the challenge is that the videos and data can only be loaded into RAM when an application does so. And if you're using one application for your videos (let's say Final Cut Pro), it's only going to be able to pull in 4GB worth of data at any given time.

However, if you were using more than one app to load/save/edit your data, then you could start better utilizing that extra RAM.

Or you could just wait for 64-bit apps. But I've no idea how long that's going to take.

An interesting post. I have a MP coming next week, and I have 4GB from Crucial ready to drop in. However, I'm one of those people that might benefit from even more, and I'm wondering whether to order another 4GB. I intend to do financial modelling with large MySQL databases. The performance boost you experience from being able to put all the indices for tables in RAM is massive for the work I do. I think I'll see how it performs with my 4GB + the 1GB in it already and decide in a couple of weeks.

You never know, I might strike it lucky and there might be more than 1GB already! :D I don't know how common this is (anyone?) but I've read some posts where people have gotten more than 1GB with a refurb...

To suggest that using more than 4GB or 9GB is somehow unnecessary based on your own useage is a litle odd.

I use 64 bit apps running on XP - I can easily max out the 16gb. Nothing better (worse) than watching your 16gb machine start to use its scratch disk

Yes - photoshop doesnt need much but try making high density models in a 3d program and render at HD. It eats memory faster than steve jobs can tuck his Rolling Stones Tshirt into his underwear.

I`m pricing 4gb sticks to upgrade beyond 16Gb. I`ll spread the 2gb sticks round other MPs. Im finding it tough to purchase 2gb kingstone sticks in the UK - probably going to go for 4gb increments. I take it I still need to match pairs so if I want more than 16 I`ll need to go for 24gb rather than 20gb?

I dont need the 32GB........yet.:D
