32 oder 64GB Ram for Large PS Files

everyone I work with very large PS files 50 GB up. With 100 levels. Has anyone had experience with the M1 MAX with 32 GB Ram? Is it worth upgrading to 64 GB? thank you for your help.

I've worked with files much larger than that with 8GB and 16GB on lesser machines. You don't need more than that, unless you have people frequently calling you asking where the work is.

Hi I can only tell you, I am working on an M1 with 16 GB and my files can hardly be edited because of the size. So your answer is hard to understand for me. Adobe has looked at it for itself on my Mac and they also said that the 16 GB of the M1 are no longer enough to work smoothly

I worked with 300mb and larger files on a Powermac G5 with 8GB back in the day. Have used 16GB since 2012 without issue. Don't know why you're having issues with an M1 and 16GB, but I never used that machine. Photoshop is a RAM hog, but 16GB should be more than enough.

Oops! I see now you said 50GB, not 50MB. Why the heck are your files that large? That's insane. I can make a 4K movie at less than 50GB. That's for the entire movie!

All images are in the files right up to the end. Smart objects are sure to die. Each image in itself in Tiff or PSB .. File size 12000/8000 pixels and everything in 600 DPI or more. 100 and more levels. Then you come across such files ..

I frequently do enormous panoramic stitches of 20+ images using 45 to 50 megapixel cameras in Photoshop, and which usually result in approximately 400 megapixel final images.

I have a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max with 64GB of RAM. My RAM pressure is usually around 75-80%.

If you're going to be primarily working in Photoshop, I honestly wouldn't get anything less than 32GB of RAM at this stage. If you're in a position to upgrade to 64GB of RAM, I would.

Did you have the 24 Core oder 32 Core?

I have found PS uses much more RAM on M1 than on Intel. On the other hand, M1 uses RAM more efficiently. Based on my experience with Adobe apps, do not get less RAM on M1 than you are needing on Intel.

Go for the 64Gb if you have the money because the memory cannot be upgraded.. nor can the SSD storage be updated.

This is Apple's approach to going green. Don't offer the ability for user upgrades so the MBP becomes obsolete for the user forcing them to buy new.

As for RAM, as most said is not upgradeable. RAM is preference. You mentioned that you have an M1 with 16GB RAM. If your memory pressure is not high even with the 50GB PS files, I'll suggest 32GB RAM.

With the SSD you can at least purchase external drives, RAID or NAS storage.
