Differences aren't as pronounced at the low end, but IPS does tend to be more desirable in a lot of areas. Almost anything in the $1000+ range is IPS. The technology itself was pioneered by Hitachi in the late 90s as a higher quality alternative to twisted nematic panel types. Given that you see very few PVA types now, most non-IPS variants, especially toward that price range, use TN panels. There are many details to a display, so you may want to check reviews on whatever you're about to purchase. If you can find anything in depth, that is even better. Saying one is better than the other is very generic, but all of the points regarding contrast ratios and viewing angles typically hold up.

I think I already mentioned this, but all displays age. These comparisons are only somewhat guaranteed to hold when comparing different models of relatively new displays.

Well I may end up holding off a bit longer to save for this guy. It's 16:10 and 1920 by 1200 which I think I'd really enjoy. Yeah it's not "retina" but it's that much closer.

That isn't one of the best displays, but it certainly isn't bad. The price has come down quite a bit since its inception, so it seems like a strong value.

Well I need to balance features and price. I can't afford something fairly high end. If it's $300 or more before taxes and shipping (if ordered online) then that's a lot for me. Thing is I can't seem to buy Dell monitors in any retail store where I live in Canada so if I go with Dell I'd have to order online. What other 16:10 monitors would you suggest which have a good balance of features for the price?

I saw the more modern 24 inch Apple Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort on eBay for around $345 shipped from a store not individual. That's a better deal than this aluminum one, as it has speakers, webcam, USB ports, charging, etc. all built in.

(Edit: just checked it's back to $349 plus $17 shipping, it was on sale just a few days ago)
