Just received my 80GB iPod Classic. It's syncing about 5500 songs as I type. I'm actually missing half of a class for this.

I've posted the unboxing at:

http://picasaweb.google.com/mikejrisi/IPodClassicUnboxing

I will post a short review tonight after I've spent some time with it. Man it was great to get that 'new Apple smell' again.

PS: I realize there have already been many reviews posted, but I'm kind of a weirdo so it should be interesting to have a review from my point of view.

Alright! I've synced my 5500 songs to it, as well as some video.

I had to run to Niagara Falls for a few minutes, so it was done when I got back, then I headed to school.

All I can say is wow. The new interface is absolutely awesome. A little laggy in cover flow, but I think that will be fixed with an update. It's not enough of an issue for me to care that much about.

What struck me the most was the speed that songs and pictures load. It's like the hard drive is constantly spinning and ready, which is quite likely considering all the background art that's moving around.

So far, this thing is awesome. It seems a couple millimeters thinner than my 5th gen 30GB. I will post comparison pics later on.

Another thing, is it me or does the screen seem more resilient to scratches? I'm sick of using a screen protector, so I'm not going to use one on this iPod. That's right, I'm goin naked and bareback.

One more thing™... Wouldn't it be cool if the cable it came with looked like the one on the display? ;)

Seriously

Thanks for posting those pictures of the White/Silver (whatever colour it is) iPod, my girlfriends said she's gunna get me a 80gb classic for christmas (I bought her a 4gb Nano for her birthday) and I couldn't decide on whether to get black or white, but the white looks awesome here, thanks.

you mean the thin dock connector? That cable comes with the iPod USB power adapter if you really want one

also, worst case scenario if your screen gets really scratched, you can just replace the faceplate with a new one from ifixit.

Schtumple, glad I could help... now it's just about the wait till Christmas.

Alright, some more first impressions.

1) That screen is F%@#) bright. I mean, really, really bright. Don't use it while driving at night with the brightness anywhere above 50%, or prepare to be blinded.

2) The form factor doesn't seem like a huge update at first, but I see a big difference between the Classic and my 'old' 30GB 'video'. It's only 1 or so millimeters thinner, but the difference is really noticeable.

3) The brushed aluminum front is amazing. They should have done this a long time ago. It looks to be a lot more resilient than the older plastic, and has a much cleaner "industrial" look. I like it a lot. I also like the sharp edges coupled with the gentle bezel. Nice touch.

4) 80GB. Eighty. I've got 5478 songs, 20 videos (a couple movies, some Simpsons, and some Family Guy episodes, as well as some documentaries at about an hour each), and 422 photos (soon to be about 7000 when I plug it in for the 'big sync' tonight. And it's only half (36.5GB) full. I still have 37.7GB free. Wow. I seriously can't imagine the 160.

5) The interface. At first I wasn't sure about it, but I absolutely love it now. The idea of showing me album covers when the selector is over anything to do with music on the main menu is brilliant. Just sitting there watching the album covers drift by reminds me of music I haven't listened to in a while.

Also, the eye candy in cover flow is just gorgeous. The anti-aliasing could use some work (jagged edges while album art is moving), but I'm sure that can be fixed with a software update. It's not something I'm too worried about.

6) One more thing about the screen. Showing photos on this thing is absolutely amazing. The brightness and colour depth is astounding. It makes my photos look even better than they really are ;)

That's it for today I guess. I hope this has encouraged the average Joe (or Mike) to take the leap.

Ok ok one last thing before I go to bed.

I REALLY like how the EQ menu shows the curve of the EQ as you scroll over it. It's not nearly as good as the (long-overdue) custom EQ. There's no reason not to have a custom EQ, even 5-band.

Thanks a lot for the pictures and the impressions. It further pushes me towards buying one. Although I will go for the 160GB version as my iTunes folder is already over 90GB big. I need some room to grow. :)

Thanks for the pics. Yeah I love my new 80GB iPod Classic. I put it in an Agent18 Shield for a 30GB iPod and it looks even more amazing, something about that silver behind the clear poly-carbonate makes it look futuristic.

I had a 5G iPod and regardless of what some people have said I'm sure the screen is much brighter and clearer because watching music videos on it seems so much easier on my eyes on this new iPod.

Wait until you see how long the battery lasts, it's soooo much better than the 5G was. I played it all day for several days (not including night) without having to recharge.

And for some reason black headphones seem to go really well with it as opposed to the white iPod :D

That's a lot of music ...

My library is only 35 GB big and it shouldn't get that much bigger since my powerbook has only a 100 GB hard disk in it. I guess a 160 GB iPod will be too small in a couple of months if you start loading some movies an photo's on it.

did it come with the iPod sock?

No it didn't, which makes me wonder if that's a hint that this one is more durable.

I've been using a gray iPod sock (one of the ones Apple sells in packs of 6 for something outrageous like $35) for 2 years now, and it's kept my 5th gen in great shape. I swear the iPod sock is the best iPod case there is.

Actually it is not that much. About 10,000 songs but all in 256AAC then some podcasts, TV shows, movies and you get 90GB. With my pictures and everything I'll just go for the 160GB. I just bought a new MBP so I could have a bigger HD (200GB atm).

I agree completely, plus you can just slide it out and control the iPod without a case! I didn't buy official socks though, i opted for the knock offs that were in FYE that came in a pack of 4 similar colors for $10 :D

so everyone's complaining that the classic's are crashing like no tomorrow?

how's your experience with it as far as stability?

might be a dumb question but seeing how I don't see info on it on apple's site anymore... can you still mount it like a hard drive?

Thanks!

i was set on the touch until today's bundle of issues. so how is the performance with the classic (any lag with menus)?

The "crashing" of the iPods from my experience has been overblown. There seems to be a possible hardware issue with the 160GB models as indicated by some sites, but hardly widespread or anything. I have had the 80GB for about a week and it has yet to crash (or even had a start up that showed the Apple logo). It turns on immediately, functions perfectly, and syncs no problem. The OS is a tad slow, but it is never really chugging.. just coverflow isn't 100% smooth and can take a second sometimes to load images (but this isn't any different than on my Windows machine :D)

lol... windows.

thanks for the info. it just seems that there's so many complaint threads on this forum. but i guess if you have nothing to complain about, why post?

Yup, you can either use it as a storage device by ticking that option in iTunes, or boot it into disk mode (center and play buttons on boot) just like the older iPods

The menu is a little laggy sometimes. It's nothing I wait more than about a second for.

Stable as my 5th gen. I've been using it a LOT since I got it, and it's never crashed.

Overall I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase. I love this thing, and I can't believe how thin it is.

I put some more pictures up at http://picasaweb.google.com/mikejrisi/IPodClassicUnboxing . The ones at the bottom are the newer ones I took while I was waiting for my girlfriend. I took them to show how friggin' thin the thing is, and to show what it does when you leave it playing a song. It displays the time, play status, and battery indicator, that's it. I like. Why should it display a bunch of stuff you don't need to see when the iPod is in your pocket?

Another thing, I turned my iPod on before I went to bed, around 12am. I let it play all the songs in my library on about a 60% charge. I checked at 11:00, and the battery was at about 35%. Amazing. I realize battery indicators are only an estimation, but my 5th gen wouldn't have lasted the night!
