Anybody have experience with these things? I have no idea what I'm looking for. Just something to get some nice slide scans into the computer, without spending an arm and a leg. Good Mac compatibility is a must, of course.

Thanks.

Slide scanners are not much in demand anymore

However, having owned both a Minolta (out of business) and a Nikon scanner I believe the Nikon is the better choice. Go to b-hphoto. com and search for nikon scanners.

Dedicated neg scanners cost a fair whack, of which the Nikon Coolscan series is the best. I personally use a Coolscan IV that does a very good job on 35mm/slide. The downside is that Nikon's Mac software is a bit...classic, but it just about does the job.

The best, more budget orientated approach, is to get a good flatbed scanner with neg carriers - for which I'd recommend Epson's higher end models (4490 Photo, V700/V750). These will take 35mm/120 negs (single or strip), slides and everything else scanners can handle.
