As I have said before, this decision depends on your wrist size, nothing else. If a 42mm fills the entire width of your wrist, it won't look right, like on me.

I have a 38mm because a 42mm looked ridiculous, and pretty much looked like I had a large screen on my wrist rather than a smart watch.

Well it is a smartwatch with more functional emphasis over the form factor.
 
Sorry to dredge this topic again, but I went in today to look at the Series 3 watches and had both an Apple salesguy and gal, suggest a 38mm on my 160mm wrist...if I go silver/alum finish.

They suggest 42mm is okay if I get space grey and with dark band, as it 'flows better".
And that the 42mm silver with any dark contrasting band (which I like) sticks out like a sore thumb.

I agree the watch finish does make a difference...as black always tend to recede and look smaller.
