They always let me extend after after 12 months -- I've always got a new phone after a year on most of my lines... this is before the iPhone came out.

Yeah, except they let you upgrade after 1 year with EVERY other phone they sell. So people are a bit shocked when you can't upgrade just because its an iPhone.

You are both correct. The key is that it varies by individual line. Some will be eligible every 12 months and others in the 18-21 month range.Well, its 12 months for me, I buy a phone every fathers day for my father and its the subsidized price every single year at the same time. (Not an iPhone)
A new SIM card will be in the iPhone 3G S. All you'll need to do is activate through iTunes + restore to get data/contacts back.
