Now the new ATV is 4K I decided to rip some of my 3D blu-rays as full 4K rips, rather than the 1080p SBS I had previously and it works perfectly. Full resolution 3D movies.

Obviously the ATV doesn't output 3D so the interface can be a pain to use while watching and the file sizes are pretty big, around 20gb for high quality rips but for convenience, it's great.

I've got several 3D Blu-Ray ISO files on my NAS, and I've tried using Infuse to play them but for some reason playback stops a few minutes after it begins.

I have ripped the disks with DVDFab to iTunes friendly mp4.

Are you saying that DVDFab allows to rip the MVC-encoded frame-packed BD3D into a nice 2x(1920x2160) SBS video? Or what exact output do you get from it? Can you share media info details, please?
For my Sony Bravia, that would still not mean anything, as it refuses to switch to SBS or OU 3D mode when UHD signal is input. I have to switch my aTV 4K to output 1080p signal, then I can turn on SBS/OU 3D imaging.
Sony loves to do things by the book.

Not quite, taking Kong Skull Island as an example, the file is 3840 x 1600 full resolution SBS MP4. When played on ATV 4K it simply displays it as a 4K picture with both images SBS but if I then turn on the 3D option on my LG and specify whether it is top and bottom or side by side, it displays in 3D.

iTunes has no problem playing the file and home sharing and playing on my ATV 4K.

They won't play on my ATV4 though.

OK, I got your point. Was just surprised to know that DVDFab is able and willing to convert MVC video like that. Maybe I should look into ffmpeg as well. Could be it can handle this as well. Or maybe video encoding in DVDFab is handled by ffmpeg as well.

Yes, I've been doing this quite some time now. Only halving the FHD frame, thereby losing half of the resolution in one direction. IMHO OU split looks visually a bit better, because horizontally it still has 1920 pixels on every row then.

Yes, you would need to encode in 1920x1080, then even aTV 3 would display your 3D picture. Because from the video processing viewpoint, it is still the same FullHD (or UHD) frame, so it consumes exact same bandwidth as 2D video of same size. The heavy lifting occurs only inside the display and you pay the price of 1/2 resolution in one dimension.

DVDFab has been my go to ripper for years, simple to use, not too pricey and I have a decent PC so it only takes about 40 mins per film.

SBS was never viable for me on the previous ATVs because of the loss of resolution and not to mention the loss of resolution already with passive 3D on a 1080p TV, would rather just use the disk.

Now though, Full res 1080p 3D on a passive 4K TV and the disks are not required.
