This makes sense, but then couldn't it measure how long the touch was?

That's when things like triggering the icon wobble move option would become an issue. This way no one needs to relearn iPhone basics.

Reading the distance between the layers and understanding pressure is the basically the same thing.

I'm not sure I understand why you've quoted me?

Hopefully this is better then Siri. Apple said Siri was THE reason to get the 4S. I've had every iPhone but have never used Siri. In fact, I've never seen one person in the real world use Siri.

Let's hope this force touch isn't just a gimmick like Siri.

You qouted me when I wrote that it sensed pressure on the screen and you said it detected the distance between the two layers. I'm just saying it's basically the same thing, and one way of measure the pressure.

My apologies I've re read your post. I read it wrong lol

Siri is great you should make friends. But yes in its early years she was stubborn as hell and didn't listen. She's mellowed. 3D Touch from a development point of view is massive! Especially in games and contextual menus

I have no idea about the physics of these things, but I wonder if screens can develop more negative issues over time because of the harder pressure required for 3D touch.

I know it may sound crazy, but I've thought about upgrading my 4S to the 6 in order to let the 3D technology have a couple of years to mature. I upgrade about once-every-four-years. :)

I am pretty sure that with proper software, any iPhone could do what this 3D touch does on the 6S. I can not see it being only hardware.
the only way the older iPhones would actually be able to do it is it was based on time & not pressure, i.e. long presses on other phones.

watts I've seen people use Siri ALLLL. of the time. Especially inside at home. Its much more convenient.

There needs to be some indicators for pressing too hard/too lightly. I can't wait to hear the complaints from people that got their non-6s phones jacked up from pressing harder than all fsck on the screen or the inevitable line of people at at&t saying they were 3d touching the edge of their new phone with no case and dropped it.Squeezeditwaytoohardbecausei'mstupid-gate? That said, I'm coming around on it not being a total gimmick as long as it isn't shoehorned in every app like stupid motion controls or kinect. It could have some interesting applications.

What Apple calls peek and pop is an example of where you can feel how much you've pressed. You first press gently to get the peek and the phone gives a slight buzz. Press even harder and you get a second buzz and the window "pops".
