i do not use a case and was wondering there is any issue with using 3D with phone on the table. More specifically could it damage the camera since it protrudes

Depending on the surface it will wear the sapphire lens cover and anodized surround after a long period of time. This may happen even if you do not use 3D touch. The lens cover is hard to damage but it can scratched.

I don't use a case either. But unless there is absolutely no other option I don't put my primary iDevices down on something unless there is something underneath it. Even if it's just a thin piece of paper.

You never know what finds it's way on to surfaces.

The phone sits on a napkin. My concern is specifically about the pressure put on the camera by using 3D Touch while on the table

There's really no need to worry about it. It's designed to withstand a lot of abuse. Having it down on a table and using force-touch on it isn't abuse, especially if you have a napkin under it.

However if it really bugs you…get one of these (depending on your iPhone model).

Thanks man. I'm just like you. Won't put it down without a buffer. Unless absolutely necessary.

It's taboo for me to put my iPhone down on a hard surface unless it's under something soft, being I don't use cases. No damage to date.

Same.

My secondary devices not so much, but totally with you when it comes to my primary devices. I count that as one reason (of many) my secondary devices survive as long as they do.
