3G auto brightness not working

When Auto Brightness is on, the backlight does not turn on in the dark.
When Auto Brightness is Off, the backlight turns on in the dark.

Same thing happens when I cover the Infrared sensor while Auto Brightness is on and I turn on the phone, backlight does not turn on, so essentially, the display is dark and I can hardly see the icons.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I am thinking this is a infrared sensor problem?

How easy would it be to repair?
