The only reason I'm waiting to get an Iphone is for my plan to be up, so I can upgrade, but I was curious as to whether the eventual 3g Iphones would be completely new phones, or if the older Iphones could simply start using AT&T's 3g Network. Or maybe Apple would do free upg's? I dunno, just curious.

New hardware is required. The chip doesn't exist in the current model iPhone.

Hardware changes are required, as the current chips only support GSM/GPRS/EDGE.
