I'm under the impression that you simply order a SIM card from a company, e.g. O2. And then when you want to use the 3G do you just buy say a GB of data straight from the iPad itself?

Can someone confirm this for me please? I've heard something about credit checks?

It is possible to get an Orange, O2, Vodafone or 3 microsim from the Apple Store or from their individual stores. You can get one at the same time as buying an iPad also. Data is just purchased directly from the iPad, either in recurring or non-recurring bundles, or as and when you need it.

A credit check would be required if entering into a contract, but I haven't heard anything about this for iPads.

Credit checks are required for everyone apart from O2 i think.

3 had some daft requirements such as your bank account being at least 3 years' old and you having lived at your current address for over 3 years.

So no 3G if you've recently moved home.

Anyway, I didn't fulfil either criteria and still got through. Seems their actual application process is as clueless as the people in their call centres.

Vodafone appears to require a credit check at the moment. Their on device activation isn't working yet either.

O2 does on device activation and does not require a credit check. But their coverage doesn't seem as good as Vodafone.

A friend of mine is using an Orange iPad SIM and is happy with the network coverage and performance.

Apparently Three are hard work to deal with - in terms of customer service etc.
