3G iPhone and FCC Approval

And that's why I think it wouldn't impact as many purchases as some believe.

But it will be 3G, plus more memory, plus a faster processor, plus a "better" screen", plus second gen firmware built-in, etc., etc. When Apple updates to 3G, it will be touted as the second gen phone, and the Apple marketing machine will MAKE SURE it's a big splash. They are take on RIM. You can bet on big iPhone updates and announcements from now on. It WILL be sooner rather than later.

I don't think anyone would want to download it through at&t's EDGE network; therefore, a hardware revision is appropriate to be announced before the software update.

You honestly think they're going to tell everyone that already has an iPhone that their phone won't work with the app store?

Get real. Doing that would make the whole price-drop-and-rebate scandal look like a birthday party.

I think he was insinuating that you still could download through edge, but it would be painful. Somewhat like downloading on dial-up and downloading on broadband. It can be done but takes forever. Influencing people to buy a new iPhone like people buy new computers.

You need to read more carefully.

I think a lot of people read too much into that "Cell Network" remark. He COULD have just meant EDGE or GPRS.. those are two Cell Network protocols surely?..

I see Apple releasing a new hardware update to the iPhone before June and the 2.0 release. Jobs said in the announcement on the 6th, "You can automatically download these apps through CELL NETWORK or wi-fi." I don't think anyone would want to download it through at&t's EDGE network; therefore, a hardware revision is appropriate to be announced before the software update.

I noticed this as well and I agree with this prediction. 3G is broadband and would greatly aid in the downloading of songs, movies, and software. Why do they currently offer a wifi-only iTunes store on the iPhone? Probably because people really wouldn't want to download Forrest Gump onto their iPhone via the EDGE network. So to say in June there will be a new downloading store for the iPhone which we'll be able to use to download software using the cell network seems to me to be a clear indication that the downloading speed will be better. I think Jobs let the cat out of the bag. I think the 3G iPhone will be arriving along with iPhone 2.0. I've firmly decided to wait till June to get an iPhone.
