and what if you tell ATT that you "lost" your phone, can you then cancel the iphone rate get a cheapy phone and have a the iphone that can be hacked to work on another network???

It could certainly not be more cost effective to pay for two telephone plans.

but lets say have someone with ATT already buy phone then say it was stolen, how does ATT account for that?? still have to pay for something that was stolen? or continue with the plan but then a new phone?

hmm i'm thinking about doing this but i wonder if its cheaper to import a 3G Iphone from lets say France or Spain where they sell unlock phone(of course knowing Apple they will probably charge like $700 for a 16gig Iphone.

You don't want to do this. I have talked to people over seas and an unlocked phone (legally) is going for 590 euros. That's 940 USD. Legally unlocked in another country? No way - even more expensive.

Personally I am waiting for shipments to my local att or apple store to buy the phone and cancel the contract after 30 days. (619 dollars at 6.75% tax after all is said and done.)

An unlocking process is still required, but thanks to the iPhone Dev Team, that won't be a problem when they come out with the legit free way to unlock the 3G.

By the way, NEVER buy iphone unlocking software. The dev team finds the process, then companies sell re-sell, but you can get it free. Check back at http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for updates.
