Seems like a bunch of stores around Nagoya got some 16GB models in stock. Went and picked up mine today.

That is so true. You know, within 4 days of my usage have racked up to 126MB and total cost of data packet is skyhigh 194,000 yen. I was shocked when I checked my current estimated bill that I called softbank immediately to see what is up with that.

But rest assured that they said the unlimited data plan is already active and will be only apply at the end of the month. I hope there are no more surprises like this  I can't take it.
Wow, thanks for sharing.

Packet charges are huge (expensive) in Japan.

Looks like the unlimited plan has already paid for itself! :)

It's a good thing for xenohawk, otherwise he might have to give up an "arm" or a "leg", or maybe both! :p

Yeah, because for that absurd amount.. I can pay for my iPhone + data plan for 2 years.

Now the estimated data packet for 211MB is.... 350,123円!!
I am going to have heart attack if my first bill is at 1 million yen.

Can anyone help translate this notice?

I think it says that the flat-rate are not included yet. Just to triple check :p

I don't think you need to worry. You had to sign up for the all you can eat packet package in order to get the iphone. My softbank bill is always the same way, some ridiculous charge and then it gets the discount at the end of the month. My Japanese isn't perfect but I've always just taken that message as saying the discount hasn't been applied yet.

It means that the amount shown has not yet applied any of the discount services or option plans so be warned that your final bill will be a different amount (thank GOD!).

You can relax, it does not say you do not have an unlimited data plan but rather that no such plans have yet been applied to the charges and will do so on the actual bill. :D

I am sure getting tired of this message:

Is GPS working for anyone else? My iPhone can't seem get a lock via satellite nor tower triangulation.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G (white): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

Yeah, it works for me - you just have to be outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky. And it takes a few minutes sometimes.

絵文字?

Any word on an app/plugin/whatever to supply the standard Japanese emoji in SMS on the iPhone?
My GF will be truly distraught if she can't send me little hearts and stuff...
And I have to admit that I kind of like being able to send my friends a message that consists only of a picture of a beer and a question mark... ;)

(Still waiting on my black 16GB :( )

GPS and Google Maps in Japan

Hello all,

Loving the iPhone BUT has anyone gotten the directions feature in Google

Maps to work out routes between two point/places in Japan? I've tried bookmarking with pins then entering them but nothing happens...

Mail and Reception and Battery

Well ... bought my I Phone on release day ... got hella lucky ... drove down to Omotesando at about 3 A.M. and stared wide eyed at the tv cameras and long line of people... decided to try my local Softbank Store in Seijo ...lined up at 6:30 with 6 other people ... at 7 the guy came out of the store and by then there were 10 of us .

He gave us all numbers and told us to come back at noon .

That was it !

Came back and got my phone!

Went to Hawaii the next day ... got off the plane and up pops T Mobile ... phone was working perfectly !

Got back here to set up my Softbank mail ... and could not send or receive...

Went to the Softbank store and they said ... wait for it ... go to Apple - it's an Apple problem ...'

Several error messages and a full outbox of test messages later - went to the Apple store in Shibuya ... The genius switches SSL off ( why is it set to on by default anyway ???) and I was up and running.

One more thing - reception has got to get better - until then however - Softbank gave me a pamphlet on some sort of in home signal booster ... gonna try it out and post on it later ...

Battery could be better - BUT I LOVE this phone !

Softbank REALLY needs to STUDY about the Products that they Sell...

Seems that NO ONE at Softbank has ANY IDEA what to do with this phone other than say -> Go to the Apple store ...

Well, I got GPS working. Guess I was just a bit impatient.

Anyway, here are a few other things that are annoying me:

no e-moji support
separate international SMS/dialing formats
no QR Code reader

It's annoying how Softbank can't just support 1 format for international calls/SMS. Phones in every other country do. Yeah, I'm talking about the "010" prefix for international calls. and "+" for SMS. Everywhere else, the "+" works for both.

Also, it seems like it should have been easy to develop and release a QR code reader. Anyone seen one the Japanese App store?

Today was a Japanese holiday so I visited Ginza, and of course the Apple Store there.

There was a huge crowd around the iPhone displays.

I asked one of the employees if they expect to have the iPhone for sale at some future date. I received the answer that I expected which was no, and that I would need to visit a Softbank shop. They went on to explain that there Softbank was out of iPhones. And that they understood that the store in Omotesandō, which is one of the largest, has a waiting list for pre-orders through mid September.

It looks like the Japanese aren't interested in the iPhone. ;)

iPhone replacements

I am probably posting into a wrong thread, but I don't really post alot, and this is the only Japanese iPhone thread I know of ;) And you guys probably want to know what to do if, god forbid, your iPhone develops dead pixels like mine did.

I'm on my second iPhone right now, and the old one is back at Apple for repairs (I got my replaced) - because it developed a single dead pixel just a few days after I got the device.

Long story short,

Called to Apple support line, and was redirected to Softbank. Called to Softbank, and they didn't know what to do about the problem (so they wrote down my phone number, and told me they'll get in touch with me later).
In the meanwhile I decided why don't I visit my local Nagoya Apple store, and - oh miracle! - had my iPhone replaced immediately!

Those who want this short story in a little more details, have a look at my blog here: http://macdiggs.com/index.php/2008/07/18/my-second-iphone-3g/

Thanks for posting this. Only minutes after getting home with my 3G I found a big spec of something between the glass and LCD. I rarely notice it, but I want to get the phone replaced with one that is perfect when stock is up. Right now I am not going to worry about it.

Finally... :)

Got my dirty, sweaty mitts (it is a hot summer here!) on the last iPhone in my area (Saitama/Urawa).

The model I got was the 16GB white one. I was a little apprehensive as I read someone said it was like the white on Apple’s mighty-mouse. My wife has that and I thought it looked/felt ‘plasticky’.

Anyway, now that I have it, the white is more like a ceramic-glossy white and has a much more quality feel to it, so I am glad I got this version. Think of the white as in the white of the androids in that amazing music video of Bjork singing ‘All is full of love’.

Anyway, I have a question: do I connect it to the Japanese iTunes first, or to the US one? I have accounts on both but I am wondering if it begins some kind of register process.

how to get one in Tokyo

Anyone know which store may have 16gb in black? Or how to preorder one?

Yeah, take it in!! I had a couple of tiny little dust specks under the screen of my iPod Touch, and took it in to the Apple Store in Shibuya (jailbroken, no less) and they replaced it in about three minutes - no questions asked. :)
