What the Lady From Apple Said

Hey i just wanted to let everyone know that the other day i had to call Apple about my iPhone e-mail messing up. As we were sitting there waiting for something... i just started talking about the rumors that were on the web about how 3G was going to be put in a whole new phone. I told her that was fine and all, but i thik previous iPhone users should get it for free, i mean most of us are still in the 2 year contract with AT T and we are also loyal customers, not to much to ask is what i said. she mentioned that the June update would include 3G capablities and that we would not have to purchase a new phone. She continued to tell me that she had waited to find out about 3G on the iPhone before she switched over from her other provider because she really liked 3G. When i talked to AT T about my moms phone a few days later, the person also reassured me that it would be in the June update, that he had heard it from Apple Represativites himself.

IDK truth or not...but definitly something to hope for!!!

3G is not a software thing it is a HARDWARE thing, the current iPhone does not have 3G hardware, thus it has no 3G. So either you are lying or those people are lying.

I can't imagine 3G drains a lot of battery if it's only used for data only. If 3G's just for data, which will be used intermittently, surely it can't be that huge a drain??
This is different from the Three network phones (UK), which depends on 3G for voice, which as I remember it, makes the phone's battery life crap.
But what do I know, even Apple has included the option to turn off 3G; so, surely it is a huge drain...

Oh man... Please just leave this crap off of the forums. There is no reason to waste everyone's time with OUTRIGHT LIES --- I don't have to tell you that a customer service rep wouldn't have the faintest idea when or if a 3G iPhone is going to be released, and sure as hell wouldn't tell you. And your idea that you should receive a free upgrade to a 3G device just for being a "loyal" customer or the idea that 3G/UMTS capability is just a software update to the existing iPhone is BEYOND LAUGHABLE, it's just downright sad.

Nice to see Apple caring about battery life when you don't need 3G for voice only.

I'd like to see an "Automatic" setting, where it turns on 3G only for selected apps, and turns it off when the app is closed. 3G is really only needed for the App Store and for Safari (at least out of the default app set).

I agree on the automatic setting. Three options would allow the casual user the flexibility of setting it and forgetting it while also giving others the option of turning it off to really preserve battery life.

I'm sure AT&T wouldn't like that. Although UMTS/HSDPA has a faster data rate than GSM/EDGE and thus users will use more total data in a given amount of time, it is much more efficient spectral wise and so it can support a lot more users at the same time, both voice and data. I'd assume because of this that AT&T would want as many people as possible on 3G/UMTS so they don't run into capacity problems on the towers (at least in urban areas..)

The Screen Shot is Fake

This screen shot is a photoshop. Although Chronic Productions Blog did indeed find the string which proves the existence of an "Enable 3G" option, the author himself admits to not knowing how to implement this string.

It seems that the image originated on Mac Rumors and then made it's way all over the internet.

In iPhone theres no firmware, there full working OS based on Darwin core, named iPhone OS.
You must be new.

Without firmware, the OS can't load. ;)

As for 3G being automatically enabled or disabled, it would be a nice option, but I would like to be able to override it.
Think On/Off/Auto

How would this work exactly? I'm curious

Auto- 3G is off by default for roaming (mail check), voicemail, etc.. but Certain apps would automatically activate 3G when launching the app and use it for connection, while other apps would leave it off and use only EDGE?

This would have to be an incredibly intuitive feature to work seamlessly. Last thing you want is Safari stalling to activate 3G first (much as it does now switching back and forth between Wifi and EDGE)
