3G on original iPhone? Icon yes, service no.

I was using an original iPhone (week 4) today and it briefly showed a 3G icon where the EDGE icon normally is. This is an ATT phone on a paygo plan and in southern California. I believe the OS level is 2.0 so the OS is clearly 3G aware.

I thought it was interesting a device which supposedly is not 3G displayed a 3G icon clearly.
