do you think the iphone can be taken apart by someone and be modified with the right hardware that uses a 3g signal ?

I doubt it because the software would need to work with the hardware and I'm sure Apple didn't put any 3g software on the iphone...yet.

Well if the output format for the 3G chip/chipset is the same it is possible that the software could handle either chipset without changing. Then you'd have to make sure that the interface to the analog front end is the same and that the pinouts are similar enough to dead-bug the 3g chip(s) to the circuit board assuming that they are not BGA packages.

All this would require someone very good with a soldering iron, and very engineering savvy. If BGA packages were used to reduce footprints you're going to have to find someone with the proper equipment to remove BGAs from the circuit board.

In short, it's possibly doable but finding someone willing/able to do it will cost you more than what the iPhone cost and probably not worth the effort for the internet speed boost and battery life reduction.
