3G S iTunes activation: Painless?

iTunes will walk you through it. It'll spend a few minutes trying to activate, and if it cannot complete, it'll tell you that you'll receive an e-mail when it's ready, and that you can disconnect and reconnect the iPhone to begin using things that do not need AT&T (iPod, apps, etc).
Mine was activated within 3 minutes at noon eastern. Hopefully most of you have the same luck I did.
As usual on a release day, it is hit or miss.

Anyone know if I could buy my husband's phone for him and activate it when he gets home from a biz trip next week? I'd like to do this in one trip but unclear if they'd let me.
Do they attach your phone number right there at the store or can that be done later?

what I'm curious about is once the activation happens does that automatically deactivate my old sim card? Does it just swap out the activated card?yeah, i'm not sure if mine is trying to activate anymore or if it's crapped out. it's just saying No Service in the upper left corner, but no other indication that it's doing anything. I can send e-mail and browse the web, but no text or phone.
I'm hoping to get out of work early today. Maybe I'll get home by 3:30 and activate. Wish me luck!

Anyone know how to get the registration screen to come up again? I tried restoring the phone but that didn't work.
When I initially registered it, I hit the submit button before realizing that my old mobile number was listed. Not sure if that has anything to do with the fact that I'm still waiting for my iPhone to activate.
