I am researching my potential in upgrading to IOS4 4.0.1 with out wiping the phone

I don't get why I have blobs for only 4.0 and 4.0.1 - I am still on 3.1.2 blackra1n and haven't upgraded itunes since 3.1.2

My phone was bought brand new retail in Aug 09

I have done some reasearch but haven't found someone with my exact case.

I'm a W7 user if this matters :apple:

You don't have to be on that firmware to request blobs for it. The process of upgrading wipes the phone, that's what backups are for.

So I should of pro-actively done something when Cydia was notifying me about "you want this" blobs???

When you say, upgrading will wipe the phone - you mean wiping the blackra1n software? Upgrading firmware in the past still preserved my contacts/apple software data...

Guessing, you are seeing your blobs in Cydia. Cydia continues to request your SHSH blobs from the Apple servers and gets whichever one they are still signing. So, in the future, it will get / show 4.0.2, 4.1 and so on. Independent of what's currently on your phone.

And, the reason why you don't have 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 saved was because Apple stop signing them when you JB and/or Cydia had a pending request that didn't go through in time before Apple close the door.

3.1.2 runs so nice... it's a hard decision to upgrade

only added benefits I see are packages like multifl0w.... and folders?

You have a 3GS, why would you not upgrade it to 4.0.1?

More accurate signal bars, fast app switching / multitasking, folders, nicer dock, rotation lock, etc.

Assuming it won't be as fast

to the other benefits you say, i'm already using backgrounder & androidlock..

4.0 sure looks nicer

ya i agree with AJ,

At least with my experience, 4.0 runs great on the 3gs, not a single hiccup during the time i was using it.

Thanks for the moral support <3

What's teh best way to go about upgrading? I don't care too much about the cydia apps in this case. I just don't want to reformat the phone.

What do you mean reformat?
Every time you restore/update your phone everything is gone.
You can then restore from backup or manually sync stuff back.
And then install your JB things.

I don't know why I can't grasp that. Everytime I had to upgrade firmware I still had my contacts, etc

Ok. I just don't remember doing that.

I guess I'll just proceed with updating my itunes first

Because right after the update you restored from your backup.

If you update to the FW version currently being signed as opposed to FW restore then everything remains intact and there is no need for a data restore.

Going from 3.1.3 to 4.0.1 while it while it was still being signed by apple worked like a charm and no data was lost and no restore of apps, contacts necessary.

Oh I see.
I'm so used to doing restores instead of straight updates. :)

4.0 sure looks nicer

My 3gs is just as fast or faster then when it was on 3.1.2.

lol it has been a WHILE since I've 'updated' so you might be right but I have my doubts about it. Either way the point is moot because he isn't updating he's restoring to 4.0.1 so he will have to restore from a backup after the fact.

Doubt it if you will, but I can assure you there are two separate processes an update and a restore that work very differently. I was aware he needed to restore but was clarifying the issue of why he does not remember having to do a data restore.

Like I said you might be right. It's been years since I've updated so I don't exactly recall the process.

big problem

backed up phone

used ipsw from http://blackra1n.org/download/download-ios-4-0/ i'm a dummy.. i am currently downloading 4.0.1 mirror from macrumors sticky
