3GS ios 5.0.1 with baseband 05.16.05 - unlock

Hey guys,
I just bought a iphone 3GS from craiglist, it was updated to ios 5.0.1 and is on baseband 05.16.05. I checked and its using the old bootroom. I would like to unlock this phone so I can use it on cincinnati wireless or t-mobile.

If possible after the unlock I would also like to be on ios 5.0.1 or 5.0

Can you guys help me get started, point me to a good working resource. A untethered would be good so I don't have to worry about restarting.

There are so many threads talking about 3GS with the baseband you have. Here is one of them;

Iclarified.com will have all tutorial you need to jailbreak/unlock your phone if you decide to do it.

How do I go about it? I'm out of touch with this process.
So, I can just download the lastest redsnow and jailbreak it and install the ipad bb and then unlock it?
But then I noticed that I need to go back to ios 4.1, will it be possible to be on ios 5 untethered after the JB/unlock?

Follow the follow thread to get your phone unlock;

You have the old bootrom, you will have untethered jailbreak on all firmwares. However, there are 2 issues you are facing if you want to have untethered jailbreak and unlock at the same time.

1. You can't go to OS5 now, currently Apple stops signing it.
2. You can go to 5.0.1 and have untethered jailbreak. However, Ultrasn0w is not updated to work with 5.0.1 yet. You might try to upgrade yours to 5.0.1 after it has ipad baseband on it, then unlock with ultrasn0w to see if it works. If not, you can always go back down to 4.1.

I too am looking for a way to unlock my iPhone 3GS. There is information plastered all over the internet, but it usually does not apply do the versions of firmware and baseband I have. I have tried using redsn0w but it did not recognize my firmware.

I have iOS5.0.1 with baseband 5.16.05. What is the first step? Should I upgrade the baseband? Downgrade the OS? And why is redsn0w not working for me?

Do you recommend to go down to 4.2.1 instead of 4.1?

if you don't have blob save, you can't go down to 4.2.1. Apple stops signing this firmware. For some reasons, they are signing 4.1 and that the reason you can downgrade to this 4.1 fw.

Ok Sounds good, I think I am ok with ios 4.1.
Here are the steps i can summarize:
Downgrade to 4.1 and jailbreak and install ipad BB and then unlock it with ultrasnow?
Sound right?

In order for you to flash ipad baseband onto your phone, make sure you download Ipad 1 3.2.2 firmware onto your computer so redsn0w can flash it from there.

Now you confused me, so I don't need iOS 4.1 firmware but iPad 1 3.2.2 instead?

But redsnow should use 3.2.2 fw internally, I don't need to download it.

I have it on my computer because that what dev team told us to do. Therefore, I have successfully flash ipad baseband anytime.

I never try to flash it without having ipad fw on my computer, so I don't know. If you want to try, please proceed and report back your result.

Thank you guys, I unlocked my phone easily.

It was simple than I thought.

Just used latest iTunes 10.5 to restore to 4.1 ipsw but it put me in recovery loop and I used tinyumbrella to get out of that and then used redsnow 0.9.9b7 to install cydia and install iPad baseband which jailbroke it and then installed ultrasnow via cydia and was able to run cincinnati wireless on my iphone.

It is easier that it sound to jailbreak & unlock your idevice. Congrat & enjoy your phone.

The GPS hasn't been working for quite a while on my 3GS, anyway. Location works, but I assume it's triangulating from cell towers. Would the unlock kill that?
