Or we'll wait a year, than buy the iPhone 5th gen. which is naturally better than the iPhone 4th gen.

True. This is just a big smack-talking, cat-and-mouse game. According to current 3GS owners, people who say the 3GS is no big update are full of rubbish. However, in about 9 months, current 3GS owners are going to being saying the exact same thing (the 3Gwhatever is not a big update, and the current 3Gwhatever owners will say they are full of it).
3x the usable RAM
2x faster processor
compass/maps integration
Better, higher res camera with video
More storage
If you don't think those first two things are important then why do you go back to using a five year old computer. I mean since RAM and processor improvements don't matter to you then it shouldn't be a big deal.
I should have never have upgraded from the 2G phone as there is always a better one each year.

It all depends on what you are using it for. A computer with less ram and a slower CPU surfs the web, emails, plays music and edits Word docs 99% as well as the latest & greatest computers. In my case, my 3G iPhone does what I need it to do just about as well as the 3GS. I can see how power users (iPhone gamers, heavy wifi users, etc) would disagree however.
If your current phone does what you need it to do and you have the willpower to resist any urges to upgrade, then save the $$ and contract renewal for the next generation device. 🙂 Otherwise go for the upgrade.
I have a 3G and my other half has a 3G S. Every time I use her phone for anything whatsoever I'm impressed w/ the overall performance of even the simplest tasks. (Example: last Friday I updated the carrier file on my 3G then rebooted it. While it was rebooting I updated her 3G S' carrier file and rebooted it. The 3G S came back to the lock screen before the 3G did.) I'm not eligible for upgrade until January 2010. Despite how impressed I am w/ the 3G S, the 3G does what I need it to do. That said, the five months from January till June will be a test of willpower... a test that very well may be flunked. 😉

It's indeed nonsense to upgrade somewhere in January, if you were able to upgrade right now you should have done that but in January 2010 I will advice you to wait.
Wow, you are putting it in a whole other context than some others do which is very nice. Yes, old computers kinda do the same as new ones. New ones just are some faster and have just 'that' little bit more. I want to have a video recorder with my phone, just if something ever happens that I can record it. Sounds crazy, but I want it. Further I use a lot of WiFi and not to forget 3G when WiFi is not available. The 3Gs supports more Mbps over the 3G network. Maybe that doesn't matter for the AT&T users, but I don't live in the USA so it does care for me. I like gaming on the iPhone a lot, and if I get the chance I will use it. I don't want to have a camera with me all the time, therfor the iPhone has one. You can make nice pictures on the iPhone 3G, but on the 3Gs I've got tap-to-focus, auto-focus, auto whitebalance and of course an higher resolution. The iPhone camera is not the best camera which is out there, but it's good enough to make nice pictures and to show to others.
I also can imagine that people who have the iPhone 3G don't want to upgrade to the 3Gs. Just because it costs you extra money and you already are familiar with most of the features.
I already know I will be jealous at the iPhone 4th generation, but than it will give me some extra time to look at the new developments of other phones and than a year later I can decide if I want a phone other than the iPhone, or if I want to buy the iPhone 5th gen. which has of course both it's new features and the features of the iPhone 4th gen.

All minor, I've used my daughters 3GS, I'll wait for faster yet, dual core, background apps, much more.

If 2X the speed is a minor upgrade to you, then why are you going to wait for another minor upgrade of it being even faster? If Apple were to allow backgrounding apps, it would be a firmware update and not a hardware update, therefore making it work on the 3gs. As for the "much more", that is what you would be hoping for and who knows what that could possibly be. History shows that a lot of people are disappointed with the anouncements though since they have such high expectations.

I predict that Apple will do cosmetic changes/minor hardware (camera and storage) every two years and major hardware changes (RAM, Processor, and storage) every other two years.
We just had hardware so 2010 will bring cosmetic and minro hardware. 2011 will have major hardware changes

Yeah. I hope they go unibody aluminum on the next one. Apple must be thinking of a way to get an aluminum case back as well as still providing a good cell signal. Isn't the Motorola Razor made out of metal?
I thought the Razor was plastic.
As much as I liked my 2G, the plastic bottom looked cheap. I don't see any way they can have an aluminum back without sacrificing signal strength. As much as everyone loves to say unibody, there isn't a need here. The GS doesn't feel flimsy, flex or creak. An aluminum back panel is different from unibody though, and I really did like those colored aluminum concepts that were floating around in March.

3G is a great phone. I would stick to that...
3Gs is a little quicker for app loading, and performs better with safari. Gaming is better, but overall safari being a little snappier is the biggest plus I see so far...

I just went ahead and bought a no contract iPhone 3GS 32gb White from the apple store for $760 which includes tax. Sold my iPhone 3G 16gb White that I got replaced by apple and sold as like new on ebay for $550. So basically I only payed $210 for my new iphone 3GS and I am not tied down to AT&T's contract rules anymore, so I can upgrade anytime I want now, while still getting service. No need to wait every two years to upgrade at upgrade price if I sell my existing iPhone on ebay for the same value of $550 when the new one comes out next year or the year after etc.

You say that cause you don't have one. I've had both. The 3G S is FAR from a glorified 3G.
Then when all the 3GS people can upgrade to the 5th Gen iPhone, everyone who got the 4th Gen phone will be "Crap, I can't upgrade because I have to wait another year!"
With the iPhone, you're never going to have the 'best' one for long. If it was late 2010 I'd say wait for sure.

I have a 3g right now, and if it doesn't have an OLED with near double the battery usage time. Forget it. I'm still staying with my 3g.
