3gs without activation

I would like to purchase an iphone 3gs from apple without activating it. I'll use it as a ipod touch and activate it later on when I feel the need. Is it possible to use all the features-wifi etc. without the att activation? Does it come with a sim card from apple? Can this be done? I just feel that why buy an ipod touch when the iphone does it all already, and later on if I decide to activate it, I'd have the phone feature available already. Thanks in advance for an advice. If you can buy one from somewhere other than an official dealer (AT&T, Apple) then you can "hacktivate" it by jailbreaking it, and then when you are ready restore it, and activate it legitimately.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll just get the touch, since I really don't want to deal with att, and wait for verizon to come on board. Rick
