I am currently running 3.0 on my 3GS and I am trying to restore the firmware. I shift+click the restore button and select the firmware from my harddrive, but as it begins the process it tells me that "this device is not eligible for the requested build". I thought it wouldn't let you restore to 3.0 only if you were running 3.1, but I have never upgraded this phone to 3.1. I am running iTunes 9. What's going on?

Apple, with iTunes 9, is trying to force all users into updating to, and staying with, 3.1 as an (supposed) anti-jailbreak measure. As an added measure, during installation it actually totally deletes and rewrites the iPhone Software Update folder that is added on the computer, removing all pre-3.1 software, before trying to get the user to upgrade.

So what do I have to do, uninstall iTunes 9 and re-install 8.2?

Unless your iPhone was jailbroken and you had Cydia store some info from your iPhone, you are basically stuck on upgrading to 3.1 from what I understand. Like mentioned, Apple won't let you install any other version now.

Itunes versions won't matter since it checks with the iTunes server first and sees what version you are trying to install. If it is 3.1, iTunes server will approve the install, if it is 3.01 or less, you will get the message that you received.

Reread his post. He's not on 3.1, but 3.0 but wants to reapply the 3.0 firmware and cannot.

My recommendation to the OP is take it to the apple store if you're having issues.

And you need to reread my post. I told him he is stuck with only having 3.1 to restore to. Itunes won't allow him to restore his phone and stay at 3.0.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

The OP is out of luck. There's no way for him to go back to 3.0. And if he takes it to an Apple Store I bet the first thing they'll do is update it to 3.1 to see if it fixes anything.

So I did

The way it was written, I had initially taken it as you were stating that he was stuck on 3.1 not stuck with 3.1
